"screen lacks contrast"
Pros: Wide selection of books, both free and paid. Free wireless access. User interface is a little clunky, but not nearly as bad as most reviewers make it out to be.
Cons: The display doesn't have enough contrast to make it readable for long periods of time.
Summary: Amazon came within inches of a great product. Sadly, it fails because the screen just isn't all that readable. Even worse, they won't acknowledge that there might be a problem. When you call tech support they tell you that they don't read blogs or reviews, or even the discussion groups on amazon.com. Very disappointing for a company that wouldn't even exist without the Internet.

The screen is very readable in most normal lighting conditions. When the light is low, I increase the font size and keep on reading.
Yes, it would be nice if there could be a little more contrast but that is state of the art for e-ink at this time. You trade away a little contrast for a display that is much easier to read than an LCD and where the battery lasts a week or more. Those are tradeoffs that I can appreciate.
