Unbelievably badby Shalisha - February 28, 2006
Pros: Good phonebook system
Cons: Appalling reliability, atrocious customer service, vile receive function
Review:
I would recommend stearing well clear of this disgusting piece of software.
It fails to handle even the most basic tasks one would expect of a fax machine. I have only had about a 50% sucess rate in attempting to send faxes, and this is over a few thousand faxes I have tried to send (in comparison, I have experienced an almost 100% rate of sucess with a standard fax machine).
It's ability to receive is also of concern. Despite my best efforts, it totally refuses to print faxes that are received by it.
Both these issues I have tried to resolve at some length by speaking/email/chatting to their customer support, which was as unhelpful as a paper fan would be in hell.
On the plus side, I like the phonebook system, and the ease by which you can setup mass-faxing... it just a shame you can't get half of them to send.

Review:
Works well when it works but unstable, irrecoverable problems and does not work in win2000 user mode (inspite of giving "everyone" permissions). - you can not trust it to receive faxes because faxmonitor sometimes works and some times not ... - for two days now (48 hrs) I am struggling to save my logs and faxes and I just made it. The problem was the creation in the data folder of a 1 kb corrupt *.fxr (strangely in the recycle was reported as 4 kb my system is clean and has fresh win installatio) that when you were going to "incoming" folder the program would crash (faxmng32.exe has generated errors), I reinstalled it about 20 times, I played with the registry deleting things, I spend hours in symantec and other forums, I tried all the repair tools available in the program the "incoming" was unreachable...in doing all this I discovered how messy logging system winfax is based (compared to Eudora & others where everything is there under all conditions and can never loose the logs). I found the problem just by chance after giving up all rest I started opening all the 250 faxes by the viewer when thied the above the viewer also crashed. So be aware of up to 5 kb files or otherwise one day you will say good bye to all your logs. These files are available for limited time for anybody asking.

Symantec Tech Support has confirmed to me that installing Winfax Pro 10 (and, presumably, any other version) will PREVENT you from using STANDBY or HIBERNATE modes on your laptop. Even worse, Winfax hides in the background and DOES NOT ADMIT that it is the problem. Instead, when you try to go to STANDBY or HIBERNATE you get an error message BLAMING YOUR MODEM DRIVER FOR THE PROBLEM AND SUGGESTING YOU UPDATE YOUR DRIVER. (Sound familiar?) But, of course, upgrading the driver doesn't work, because it wasn't the driver's fault in the first place. If you want more details, contact me at my real e-mail address: sgsatty@hotmail.com

Pros:

Version 10.02 works acceptably as a stand-alone product. Symantac has still not corrected the display bug when typing comments in custom cover sheets. Symantec continues to say it is a Windows error evey though no other program does it and the error is the same in Windows 98 through XP. Do not try to use fax sharing. The setup is very buggy and even if you get it working it will hang up, freeze, and require rebooting multiple times per day. Version 10.0 on Windows ME was just barely functional, but 10.02 on Windows XP simply does not work.

Tried sending a few faxes and which works fine as well but haven't thoroughly tested that function. Highly recommend if you receive lots of faxes and are tired of buying inkjet cartridges and paper. I must say that I have been using Winfaxpro since the delrina days right up to version 10.02. I consider it an absolute rip off that I had to upgrade from 10.0 to 10.02 to have it work with XP especially since I just purchased 10.0 3 mos ago. I will agree that it is buggy, and their support is lousy, but I have become accustomed to its user interface and its just second nature to me. Hence, the reason I use it. You as a reader of these reviews must understand that everybody's machines are going to have different experiences with any software due to what their speed, memory and amount of pre existing software they have. It also depends on how well they follow intructions (we all read them dont we?)All in all, I am really disappointed with Symantec's loyalty to their devoted paying customers regarding their requiring us to purchase a new version just to have it be compatable with XP.This is the last time Symantec gets my money.

Although the user interface seemd workable on the face of things, when one tries to use this through a server based contacts list (I'm using SQLView)there is no way to integrate this list with Winfax and i have to copy the list to the native "contacts" in "outlook today" which is a poor solution. I mentioned this to the company and was dismissed. Also the WinFax generates a second database of addresses, which can become corrupted. We really need an inexpensive product that will simply use the existing data from any contacts list to address faxes.

The more you use it, the more you find out that the pretty facade is based on a very dirty hack. And the Symantec support organization is very bad too, since they refuse to reveal what ports Winfax work at. They keep answering that it won't work through a router anyway (which is just one of the serious limitations not mentioned on the box). Faxing should not require such a dinosaur user interface, and it's still very unstable too even though they recently made the W2000 version XP compatible (requiring a full reinstall). Remember when Norton Utilities was a godsend? What's going on with Symantec programs in the last 5 years? I've owned Winfax versions as far back as 3 when Delrina was still developing it. Back then it was a really good program. Even through version 8. Lots of features, some I never use, but the now even the basic stuff doesn't work well. Just try to type a message on a cover page and edit it to see what I mean. When 10.0 has bugs and fixing them requires a $50 upgrade to 10.02 with no real gaurantee of fixing things, I've got to look elsewhere. Backing up and transfering fax histories to other computers is very difficut to do. If I install the win 2000 to XP upgrade on the machine I've got winfax installed on, I'll need to move 10.0 back to another networked win98 machine (10.0 does not support XP.) Of course this would leave me with the task of trying to configure winfax to work over the network and like some of the other users, I use 0 in the third octet of my machines' IP address. As far as their tech support goes, there is some good information there, but I have to use the support web site for every symantec product I install on every machine I own. It's just too much trouble. I'm really disappointed in CNET for recommending this product.

So I go to the knowledge base looking for answers. I find something about adding non admins using win2k with a tool installed with winfax called regacces. Ok, Great. I use the tool and add the user. Log back into the user and winfax gives you a message on startup it changed the configuration and needs to reboot. After 3 reboots getting the same message I decide to pay 30 dollars and call tech support. After 45 minutes of holding I get someone on the phone. I tell him the situation and ask him to walk me thru a fresh install. While installing he hears me mumbling the ip address of where the host is located. Then he tells me oh we dont support ip addresses with a single 0 or 1 in it. I'm like what? He said yes, to many problems with ip addresses with 1 or 0. It just so happens My internal Ip address scheme has both in it. I ask him why does it work with local admin then? he said he does not know they just dont support my ip address, and if I stay on the phone they will charge me again. So he told me to reconfigure my entire network and call back. I never heard such mickey mouse bs in my life. Especially from a company like Symantec.

The worst problem I have encountered on my new W2K system is that, as long as Winfax 10 is installed on my computer I can go online once immediately after the install (if I'm lucky) and then I can't until I deinstall Winfax again, then everything works fine. I use a Zyxel 2864I with a 20 mb memory in it. I am very frustrated about this problem because I must say that Winfax worked perfectly for me on W98. With Win98 I could leave the Controller running in the background and go online. Now, no matter how Winfax is setup (needs COM1 not Tapi in order to be able to pick up the faxes from the modem's DRAM) it's useless. Their website makes it very difficult to find a human. When I installed the software, it didn't work with Word 2000. If you work hard enough, their website will tell you to download a file and install it. The instructions are good. The file is not to be found. I work for myself. Wasting a day with someone's software that doesn't work is an expense I can ill afford. Wasting my money on this worthless junk is really irritating.

WinFax Pro 10.02 SUCKS!!!by - August 19, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review:
OK - I was simply trying to set up 2 internal modems, one to send, one to receive. Randomly, after receiving a FAX, WinFAX attempts to reset the modem and produces the "CANNOT COMMUNICATE WITH MODEM - PEASE POWER". Of course, thses are internals, so powering requires downing the machine, and starting all over. The program would also cause the modem to hang during a FAX receive, also causing WinFAX to lose communication with the modem. I tried Windows ME, and then Windows 2000. Support SUCKS. They told me you can't connect another analog device (phone, FAX, answering machine) to the same phone line as the modem. BS! The computer does not talk to the modem over the phone line Why do you think they have to connectors on the back of the modem? As long as you don't have both analog devices answering the phone at the same time, there shouldn't be a problem. WinFAX might work with external modems, but there are no recommendations by Symantec. I even recommended this to a customer like an idiot! The product works under the most basic configurations, but the advanced features are FLAKY! Don't BUY THIS POS.

Unfortunately I agree with the negative comments about WinFax v10.02, which at this time is also the latest. I find it very disappointing that you cannot fax from Word XP at all. I am not even talking about anything fancy like having the fax# and names imported straight into the fax program. I just cannot fax from Word XP. Period. I reinstalled both, WinFax abd Word several times, in different orders, nothing helps. Besides, if you are planning on having a V.92 modem with WinFax, think again. My external Zoom 3048L V.92 modem loses its V.92 capability when the WinFax control center is on (and you need it on, don't you, if you expect to receive faxes).

I have been using winfax since version 7. I never had any problems appart from importing old logs, unfortunately online support is very poor regarding this, symantec is aware of the problem long ago but they are not doing anything! I am now using winfax 10 on windows XP Pro and everything is working ok on my 2 computers [home and work] although I lost some old logs which I can not import at my home computer. I find it unfair to pay for the winXP update and this is the reason I am still using version 10. I was suprised when I read that so many people have so many serious problems with winfax. I knew that customer support was poor but not aware that it was sooooooooo bad. Probably I am one of the luckiest users of winfax. However I will try to find a new fax software to use since winfax is not as stable as it should and symantec is not offering the level of support it should. Like many of the other reviews here, I've been strung along with update after update of the Winfax product. I keep hoping the new versions will take care of all the idiosynchrasies, but they don't. I have used it on Win95, Win98, and now Win2000 machines, and it simply is unreliable at receiving faxes. I have tried three different modems, including a top-of-the-line US Robotics business level external modem, and nothing changes. I also agree with the comments about poor Symantec customer support. They rarely issue essential patches on their website (or through the "Live Update" feature), and the new versions (at ~$100 a pop) don't get better at all. I'm in dire need of new fax software. Any ideas????

I have been a user of Winfax since 5.0 version. What keeps me coming back to it is it's the features they advertise. the truth is that I am sick and tired of trying to make the program work right and it gobles alot of system resources which causes other problems. I always seem to have a different problem and most of the time there is no solution or you have to call and pay to have the problem resolved over the phone, this problem was created by Symantec to begin with by not doing the program right to begin with. I bet Symantec is making a bundle of money on what they charge us for tech support for a porduct that they made to not work correctly. at this point I have bought a new computer with Windows XP and am obligated one more time to upgrade because Symantec did not issue a patch for XP like everyone else. So I ask my self do I want to go through the agrivation of installing the new 10.02 and start having all the same problems again or just go with some other program that may not have all the bells and wistles but does all I need. This is the end of a 7 year journey with Winfax, Symantec you find another Sucker to pay for another upgrade of your program, but not me.

The attitude of all Symantec personnel was to be technically polite but 'please only ask one simple question and then leave our support line'. First of all, I'm not one to respond to these rating things and tend to be quite forgiving, but I believe CNET is way out of line in their review and solid recommendation of this product! I started way back as one of the very first users of the very first release of Delrina and loved the product - all the way through version 8. I recently upgraded when I purchased a new computer with XP. BIG MISTAKE. Not only is it the first (and only so far) product for which I've had to pay for an XP patch (not only pay, but pay dearly!), but from the very first attempt at installation my computer was doomed. It locked up almost instantly when I ran the install. It took herculean effort just to get my computer to reboot. Then WinFax told me I needed to uninstall previous versions. This was impossible because, try as I might, I could not find the previous versions let alone uninstall them. When I did finally get my computer to boot somewhat normally, Outlook 2002, Word 2002 and IE6 were all messed up. I tried the Symantec website and knowledge base but the workaround made a bigger mess. I tried WinFax tech support (and I must say I was extremely angry that after spending $60 to destroy my operating system I now had to pay an exorbitant FEE to beg WinFax to fix their own problem), I was on hold for over an hour (fuming and trapped in my office the whole time) and finally gave up. I spent days searching newsgroups, then I spent money for Microsoft support and, even though it wasn't their problem, they spent hours (like 9 total over two and a half days) trying valiently to help me out (and only charged me a one-time $35 fee). To this very day I still have bizarre trouble with Word and Outlook. I am a self-employed, independent financial advisor and rely heavily on my computer for my research and presentations. I hate to think how much income I've lost in addition to the money I've spent. And what do I have to show for it? I have a computer that still isn't stable (it was only two months old and working like a dream before I "upgraded" WinFax), I've missed faxes, sent bungled faxes, lost fax history, and spent more money still on a new fax program. I've been a supporter of many Symantec products since before a lot of today's computer users were out of diapers; however, not only will I never let a "fixed" WinFax product come anywhere near my computer, I will never use another Symantec product of any kind. I realize this isn't very succinct and doesn't adhere precisely with all of your guidelines, but I do want you to post it.

The symantec "knowledge base" web site offers a solution that doesn't work . . . I spent hours trying to fix it . . . one of there "fixes" requires you to make a change in Word 2000, great . . . it won't open because WinFax PRO screws things up!!! I tried calling their $29.95 fee based customer service . . . can't get through! I have other symantec product sand use LiveUpdate . . . why can't they fix this??? Very, very POOR customer service!

Okay, so I can fix MS Word (which was disabled when I installed WinFax Pro V.10. How did THAT one get by testers at Symantec?). But my customers use Word Perfect. So far I can't find a way to send multiple WordPerfect documents in a single FAX transmission, which was easy in Version 9 but seems broken in 10. I posted my problem on Symantec's web page, got no response except the auto-response saying they usually get back to you in 24 hours or less. I checked their tech help page and found pages and pages of posts without any responses from Symantec. GREAT CUSTOMER SUPPORT!

I installed 10.02 on top of Windows XP, had problems and when I tried to uninstall it, it syas files are missing and I cannot uninstall! The files are not missing , it's just that the winfax files literally spread themselves out "all over" your disk. Multiple partitioned drives have multiple folder setups. In short it's a nightmare; I never even got one fax done. I would advise only installing this if faxing is your main pre-requisite and you don't have anything else on your machine (Who fit that bill?). Support is non-existent and "the" only answer is to uninstall practically everything you have on the PC Ofice Pro et al. Nightmare, you better believe it.

How can Cnet give this product such high marks and 80% of the consumer ratings on this site are poor. Tech support is very poor and they just pass problems off as computer related. Product is resource hungry and requires us to restart computer numerous times a day to return resources. If you have a win-modem and not a hardware modem it crashes computer regularly since tech support says it needs a designated IRQ on the computer, too bad since most computers come with win-modems.

In the UK it is extremely deifficult to get hold of a copy of 10.02 because there is sl little information about it. Not surprising when it was supposed to solve the problems interfacing with Outlook 2002 - which it has failed to do. As far as support is concerned, they used to run a newsgroup then they tried to restrict it and then they shut it down - too many negative comments. CNET on the strength of the comments so far how can you leave the rating unreviewed in the light of the feedback here?

Although the program itself is not bad as fax programs go, it is pricy, especially if you are buying an upgrade. If you have never installed winfax on your computer, the installation should go well. However, if you are upgrading from an older version, watch out!! Although the user guide says that previous owners who are upgrading to a newer version should just run the install program, it is not so. If you have an earlier version, even 9.0, the installation will crash only to give you a message that says: "WInfax has found an earlier version and can not proceed with the installation. Please remove the older version and reinstall. It's not just the odlder version but everything in your computer that has anything to do with winfax must be removed. I contacted symantic and received a grocery list of items to remove and lousy instructions on how to do it. You would have to be very computer literate to complete the installation. As for me, it went back to the store where it came from with a full refund. I would reccommend a different fax program if you are looking to upgrade. If this is your first time with Winfax and you don't mind the price, good luck. Keep in mind that almost every upgrade for this program over the past 5 years has averaged over $68.00. That's no way to treat loyal users.

Not stable = does not work. Well, maybe if you send a fax a day...by - February 6, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review:
WinFax is so unstable it is ridiculous. It is a shame software companies can sell products that don't work. It might be good to send a few faxes here and there but otherwise, avoid this product for any business use. If you send many faxes, it will definitelly hang on you at some point. Can get corrupted. Have seen occurences of multiple faxes sent to the same recipient because fax was marked as failed when it was successfull. I also tried their SDK. A real joke. Cannot even be assured of the status of a fax. Since WinFax will at one point use all system resources and slow to a crawl, you cannot assume anything. Very few features and very unstable. I have marked the ease of Use as poor even if the interface is easy because what good is it if it can't perform? BTW, for network faxing, buy FaxGate instead. It also has a good SDK for developpers to automate STABLE faxing solutions. Because of WinFax, I will never buy anything else from Symantec.

Bungled ever since Version 3by - February 5, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review:
This was a good product at Version 3. It was stable, not very intuitive but worked great. Pet peeve many "send" buttons on each fax, think of a new name for a button that is "continue" or "next" since the "send" buttons do not send the fax. Since Ver 3.0 it is bloated with "features" and crashes. If it were not for Y2K prob. we would go back to 3.0 Try to run this puppy as a stand alone receive fax machine it will not last more than 24 hours without a lock up. Then there is the much beloved ?database check?. The program ties your machine up with a lengthy bar graph marked database check at every reboot. Just what the heck does it do with all that checking? Program often can't recognize a fax board and often gets a good connection but fails to transmit the fax. Can also cause "gigantic" faxes on other machine as it stretches letters and graphics to 5 times correct size. Symantic bought the rights to this program and then forgot about it. R & D stopped ages ago, but they still bring out new versions. They dream up new bugs and sell it as improved. I would say it must be that writing fax software is impossible but RightFax (a seriously overprice competitor) has none of these problems. Finally to try and understand all those set ups and menus is a nightmare.

Convenient and powerful, but resource-hungryby - February 5, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review:
Many of users who've given this product a thumb's down complain about the exorbitant cost of upgrading for Windows XP. Actually, registered users can order an upgrade CD from Symantec for $19.95. It's surprising that this incremental upgrade (from 10.01 to 10.02) isn't covered under the "Live Update" feature in WinFax. Without this upgrade, WinFax would receive only one page of a multi-page fax. I've used WinFax PRO ever since it was a Delrina product. It's become more bloated and resource-hungry over it years, but it's still the easiest and most powerful faxing software available. As a free-lancer, I'm frequently asked to fax resumes to clients. I like the way WinFax lets me attach files, preview how everything looks, then stamp the cover letter with my signature. And it's the only faxing program reviewed that still integrates with Ecco Pro.

As of of today (02/05/2002) Symantec STILL has not been able to make this product compatible with Outlook XP/2002 (a product which was released on 10/25/2001!). The partial workaround on their web site does NOT address other serious functionality impacts on Outlook such as the disabling the macros, which you are then NOT able to turn back on! In all my years of using Symantec products, the incompatabilities with both Windows XP and Office XP are the worst. Buyer seriously beware!

I continue to use TalkWorks Pro, which includes Winfax. It's a good product even though it gets a bit quirky sometimes and really sucks up system resources. However, the support for this product was actually terminated less than nine months after I bought the product. This is not responsible. Even Microsoft, which gets a lot of criticism, supports their products for a span of years, not months, before dropping support. Because of that, if I could get another product that would do what I want and integrate with my existing Outlook database, Symantec's product would be replaced on my machine.

This is the most disappointing piece of software I have bought in years. I spend $100 on an upgrade that should have been included as a free patch on the internet so that it would supposedly work with Office XP --- what a joke! As a former user of 10.0, I cannot believed that these guys coned me into spending a $100.00 on a product with no new features --- can you imagine! After repeated attempts, I have been unable to get the software to integrate with Word or with the email feature in Outlook. Tech support for this product is the worst I have ever had the mis-fortune of interfacing with. I recently complained online about the lack of new features and the inability of this product to interface with Office XP, and I was told by the technical representative that I was "ranting". Hopefully, this is the last Symantec product I am going to buy.

I upgraded from Winfax 10.0 to 10.02 simply to overcome some incompatability problems with Outlook 2002. However, these probelms still exist and despite repeated assurances by Symantec, there is no sign of a fix (other than partial solutions called 'workarounds' which require an unreasonable amount of work by the software user) more than 4 months from the launch of the product. What is really annoying is that Symantec's technical advisers continue to tell potential users of its 'Knowledge Base' that only 10.02 is compatible with Office XP - believe me, it isn't. Any chance of CNET putting some pressure on Symantec to come clean on when a patch will be available resolving these problems?

I have had problems with other communication and networking program incompatibilities with WinFax 10 and I eventually turned off the email feature to get rid of some of them, and wasted a lot of quality time. Symantec has the worst user support web site. It deletes all support messages after 2 weeks but it still shows you the deleted messages in a search (with no date). Then when you try to open 90% of them it tells you that it's gone. DUMB!!! They were selling Ver 10.0 up until a few weeks ago (mine was bought late last fall) and they won't update 10.0 to 10.02 with a patch. 10.02 is required for WinXP so after my upgrade to XP, WinFax 10 it is an expensive piece of junk. I REFUSE to pay for it again so I can use it on XP, it wasn't worth it the first time! Use your email software and the fax software that now comes included with WinXP if you have it, it's not bad. It will save you money and a host of compatibility problems.

Then other problems started popping up. All the problems were acknowledged by Symantec and a tech privately said they were known bugs which Symantec was NOT working to correct. Rather than fix the problems they offer "workarounds", sort like taking detours to get to work for the rest of your life. None of the problems have gone away with a new computer. Is this dog dying of old age? Great idea on which I have spent a lot of money and now time, but my time is worth more than the productivity winfax initially provided and now fails to deliver. FULL PAGE VIEW, PAGE WIDTH VIEW. FORMATTING IS ALWAYS DIFFERENT ON THE WYSIWYG VIEW THAN WHAT ACTUALLY GETS FAXED. 3) DATABASE CORRUPTION IS CONSTANT. AND THESE ARE THE ERRORS WHEN YOU USE IT AS A SINGLE USER. THE NUMBER OF PROBLEMS THAT ARISE WHEN YOU TRY TO USE IT AS A NETWORK FAX SOLUTION WILL DRIVE YOU SHOOT YOU COMPUTER. I USED TO USE IT AS ON WIN 98 WITH A P3 800 WITH 256 MB OF RAM AND IT USED TO HOG UP SO MANY RESOURCES IT FROZE UP MY COMPUTER AT LEAST ONCE A DAY. NOW THAT I USE IT IN WIN 2K THE RESOURCE ISSUE ISN'T A BIG DEAL BUT THE OTHER PROBLEMS STILL FRUSTRATE ME. WinFax Pro 10.0 sucksby - December 10, 2001

Review:
I have been using faxing software for many years on Amigas, Macs and PCs and WinFax Pro 10.0 is the worst piece of fax software I have ever used. I agree 100% with those who have expressed their strong disappointment and disapproval with WinFax Pro 10.0 The reviewer of WinFax Pro 10.0 found the WFP 10 Photo Quality print driver great, but does not bother to mention how embarrassing it is to send a fax using its regular/default printer driver to send a fax with a logo or any other graphic in it. It is just horrible. This driver is meant only for simple text documents. Anything fancier than that would get the sender ostracized. The Photo Quality printer (mode?) is no better than that of any free fax software I have tried. In fact, its end product, what the receiver actually gets, is worse than that of any fax software I can remember. And they don?t use any ?special? drivers to try to make graphics look any better. And they are much faster, too. Another item the reviewer finds great is the email-fax feature. Hah! I have always used my email client (Outlook, Outlook Express, Eudora, etc.) for emailing attachments. That?s exactly what WFP 10 does anyway. But it takes much longer to deliver the mail than using the any email client. Who needs this? If I had used WFP 10 as my first fax software I would have dashed to an office supply store to me a cheap dedicated fax machine. That?s how bad WFP 10 is. Too bad because computer faxing is efficient, inexpensive and extremely convenient. Shame on Symantec.

Beware the install script is broken. If you have to break out of the install it leaves your system in an unable state. During reinstall it will complain that you have to uninstall previous versions, but the control panel will not list previous versions. The only help you can expect from Symantec is a two page instruction sheet on how to comb the files systems for pieces of the install, edit the registry, etc.... If you want any additional help there is a FEE. The fact that the instructions are there indicate that they know the install is broken. Hard to have faith in an anti virus product that is produced by a company that can not correctly implement an install script. I am VERY VERY sorry I wasted the money on this.

and I read that WF10 is still worse than WF8... In my case I trashed WinFax for one of the worse famed and oldest free bundled apps, FaxWorks, that actually works much better than WinFax for me. In WF8, the low level parts (dealing with bits, chips, code lines) are written fairly. But the higher parts (data organization, user understanding) are lacking. For instance when recording, WF8 doesn't tell you through which MIC entry (sound card or voice modem) it expects your input: you just waste time guessing and trying. Everything is like this; finally I never got WF8 working before I ran out of time. Back to old good FaxWorks. Paris, Mon 12 Nov 2001 05:13:35 +0100

Does not install as described in the users guide. You have to uninstall any previous versions first. A huge pain and the backup information did not reinstall correctly. Locks up Winword 2000 because of a macro problem. You will get a VBE6.dll error that closes Winword. The solution is well hidden in the Symanted support site, and requires you to delete the file wfword2k.dot. You cannot permently change the shading in the stamps. Each time you use a stamp you have to change the properties. While the support site is aware of all these problems, they apparently are too busy to fix them. Very big step backwards for what was a wonderful product. Symantec should be ashamed of themselves.

Easily replaces a messy (paper) & noisy fax machine. Works extremely well on a single work station basis. Built-in stock generic fax programs cannot compare to WinFax. However, if you aren't using WF for business purposes its utility diminishes. Winfax pro will not run right with 2 phone lines, even with most of its featurs turned off. Which is where it left me; turned off. Sad to see a program this bad from Symantec.

Tried to load it every way possible, but got error codes that timed our 8 sec. into transmissions. No phone support ($29.00 on top of an already expensive program). Site support is a maze that culmionated in my removing it from the system. Now if only I can get my money back.

Symantec needs to think about what they should do after software. WinFax Pro 10.0 would not get past throwing my system into full lockdown. It got the 3 pixel wide border and title ribbon on the screen for its install routine and locked up. I finally got it to install through hunting down the setup.exe file through a drive window. Between this and one other product, my opinion of Symantec has come off the moutain and plunged into the deepest, darkest, valley of ill repute.

Never try it as a host/client solutionby - June 28, 2001

Symantec themselves informed me that the HOST configuration does not run on NT 4.0 / W2K server. Obviously, after installed there. You need to install the HOST on a workstation. Client's get "timed out errors while getting a response from the Server" all the time which drives users crazy, although faxes are sent correctly. Very unreliable!
