WinFax Pro 10.02 (discontinued)

WinFax Pro 10.02

Entered CNET Catalog: 09/08/2001

SKU: 301614

Manufacturer: Symantec Corporation

Manufacturer description

WinFax Pro enables you to stay in closer contact with your clients and colleagues, reach out to new customers and look more capable and professional in the process. It makes sending and receiving faxes right from your PC, as well as adding intelligence, automation and quality, remarkably easy. Communicate more easily, quickly, and efficiently with colleagues, customers, and prospects. Bids, proposals, correspondence, invoices, and purchase orders can all be faxed in seconds. You'll save time and money every time you fax. Every fax will be transmitted clean and straight, with laser-print quality. Are you sending the same fax to more than one person? WinFax Pro sends to any number of people in one quick step, instead of forcing you to feed the same pages over and over. Send and receive faxes from anywhere - if you have a cellular phone, you don't even need a phone jack. Need a hard copy of a document? Just fax to the hotel front desk - no need to invest in a portable printer or pay copy center charges. You can automatically forward faxes to wherever you'll be, or remotely retrieve them from wherever you wind up. Organize faxes into categories by creating different folders; view them in convenient thumbnail form. Automatically keep a detailed log of all the faxes you send and receive - never lose a fax again. Send your faxes as files - and recipients can import them into applications like word processors and spreadsheets and work with them without retyping. Or, turn faxes you receive into editable text, using Xerox Textbridge Optical Character Recognition.

When its good its great..when its bad its horrible

Pros: Did work well doing mail merge and sending faxes

Cons: Hope you never have problems because. you're SOL..

Review: Bit of a problem installing this software but finally did and it worked fine. The real problems began when something became corrupt. I tried to do a file repair by installing again but a message kept coming up saying I could not install because the program was already installed!!

I then uninstalled and then my entire system crashed. Took it to a computer store and they said this happens a lot with this program. Cost me $200 in repairs and two days reinstalling everything.

I really could use a program that can do a mail merge from ACT but I just dont dare try this one again.

It was a terrific product in its day

Pros: Everything you could ever want in a fax software

Cons: No lonter supported

Review: Winfax pro is very long in tooth. It has been around ever since windows 95 if not earlier. It was developed to support the relaxed requirements of an earlier era. It could not be redesigned to support the requirements of modern pre-emptive operating systems.

Consequently, Symantec released the product to the public domain.

Sadly, Winfax Pro is useful only for those with legacy operating systems.

I HAVE USE WINFAX FOR 20 YEARS AND COULD NOT IMAGINE HAVING ANY OTHER FAX SYSTEM.

Pros: FANTASTIC DETAIL AND EASY TO USE.

Cons: TRYING TO MAKE THOSE EAST INDIAN'S UNDERSTAND WHAT I AM LOOKING FOR...ALL I GET FROM THEM IS SUPPORT FOR WINFAX IS DISCONTINUED!!! THEY ARE LIKE A BROKEN RECORD

Review: WINFAX HAS TURN INTO THE BIGGEST PAIN IN THE ASS THAT I HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED!!! THE MINUTE I PURCHASED THE 10.03 UPGRADE THEY DISCONTINUED TECHNICAL SUPPORT AND I HAVE HAD MORE PROBLEM'S THAN YOU CAN IMAGINE.

I WOULD NEVER HAVE COME ACROSS THIS REVIEW IF IT WASN'T FOR THE FACT THAT I WAS SEARCHING FOR ANOTHER FAXING PROGRAM ON CNET.

IF I APPEAR TO BE ANGRY...I AM!!!...I HAVE LOST IMPORTANT COMMUNICATIONS THAT HAS AFFECTED MY LIFE BECAUSE OF THIS CRAP PROGRAM.

IF YOU WANT TO EXPERIENCE THE SAME FRUSTRATIONS THEN WASTE YOUR MONEY BECAUSE YOU WILL NOT GET ANY HELP FOR THE MONEY YOU SPEND!!!

Symantec - not a company to deal with

Pros: Used to be a good product...

Cons: Not any more...

Review: If you click on Symatec?s site to show all products, Winfax is not listed at all?
Same is true if you try to check for an update or an upgrade.
Yet, I have accidentally discovered that versions 10.03 & 10.04 exist?

Even though the product?s documentation specifies where to get support, it is not available. These folks are simply criminals.
Symantec removed any 800 #s, even for sales. When you check their website, they removed even their local phone #, leaving only their address.

Winfax 10.02 claims to be Windows 2000 Pro compatible but is NOT. It works only in Administrator mode and would not work in User mode, where one should really normally login and how true W2K compatible applications normally work. This is a typical pattern of Win 95/98 applications, that their vendors massaged then only a little bit if any, and claim that they are W2K compatible.

Symantec?s main business recently is offering protection for a fee against viruses they probably create (probably indirectly) ? in short, a mafia par-excellance.

Symantec does not support this product and will not answer questions their staff is rude and hateful

Pros: There are no Pros to a product not supported by its maker.

Cons: no one should sell products they don't support

Review: Everyone should be warned not to buy this or any Symantec product. When a company allows it's products to be marketed and sold but refuses to support that product a week after purchase. This is unethical and I recommend that everyone boycott Symantec products.

Great Program! Pays for itself over and over

Pros: receive your faxes to your PC-print the ones you need-delete the others WITHOUT any paper, ink, or toner wasted!

Cons: only one small one-you cannot answer an incoming voice call on your fax line and then manually receive if the call turns out to be a fax.

Review: WinFax Pro 10.03 lets you save even more by using a calling card to send at cheap rates! AND WinFax Pro 10.03 will forward a fax to your e-mail so you get timely faxes when you are out of the office! Don't be fooled by the posters who did not take the time to properly understand/configure this program. WinFax is not simple but offers a vast number of choices and functions.

Excellent Product

Pros: Many! Being able to receive faxes to hard drive

Cons: None that I know of yet

Review: Looking at these reviews it's just disgusting. I've used version 10.02 and 10.03, on 8 different computers, for about 4 years without any problems. The software has saved me tons of money in toner and long distance fees. The ability to save incoming faxes to hard disk rather than being printed out is awesome. Then all junk faxes can be weeded out and never printed, which used to waste money big time. Version 10.03 has ability to use calling card for outgoing faxes. Over last 2 yrs. I've been using it with calling card and only paying about 2.5 cents a minute for long distance which is a lot cheaper than my long distance provider. Another really nice feature is the ability to forward faxes via e-mail. I have the software setup with my outgoing mail server and all incoming faxes are sent out via e-mail to my e-mail address. Thus any fax sent to my office can be retrieved anywhere I have internet access. For my small business I can't say enough good about this software. It's easy to use and implement and best of all is the money it's saved me. If someone loses a fax and it needs to be resent this software is a godsend. You just go in the Send Log right click on the fax in case and click on resubmit, awesome. Records of all faxing is important for my business also and it's easy to backup the fax logs. I've seen other ridiculous reviews concerning some of Symantec's products. C-net people, you should do a better job overseeing these posts. It's like someone is intentionally posting completey false and misleading information in regards to many of Symantec's products!

Totally worthless!

Pros: It uninstalls.

Cons: Hangs in a heartbeat.

Review: We have tried to install this on Windows XP SP2 over a dozen times, changing optiuons to determine if the problem is related to only one part of the program, without success. The program hangs, usually before the it is fully on the screen. It causes other unrelated programs to hang as well. Support is unavailable. I'm using the CDROM as a coaster.

WinWhacker 10.02

Pros: Good training program for WinXP repair technicians

Cons: Doesn't handle faxes to well

Review: I've used the previous couple of releases prior to 10.02 and they had stability issues, but this is just absolutely useless to my company.

My opinion is that a class action lawsuit against Symantec is in order.

Works Stand alone but done use XP Service pack 2

Pros: Works on windows 98 or 2000

Cons: Does not work with XP has NO support (paid is India)

Review: There is no support on this product. I would expect it to be discontinued soon, paid for support they have no compabilitiy if using the host mode and server mode faxing to a dedicated PC. Many forums are full of former users.
Unless using this with windows 2000 or newer save yourself the headache and a little bit of money and skip this product. It used to be but is no longer supported as no new development has happened in several years.

Winfax Trash

Pros: Wincrap Pro

Cons: Crap Winfax

Review: What a piece of trash! Tried it and now I can't uninstall it without having to manually uninstall this trash. Tried to setup Winfax and it errors out on adding area code. Suggestions from Symantec doesn't work worth a crap. Don't buy or use this untested piece of trash.

WinFax Pro is not Pro enough

Pros: Flexability and accessability

Cons: Stability and graphical editing

Review: I have use WinFax for many years and on each release I pray for them to address a few issues.
First and formost is the stability of the program and that many other software and Windows itelf has compatability issues. I have never understood why a fax program causes so many problems for other programs. Staring Winfax with the lates McAfee virus update - causes my computer to goto 100% CPU usage and never comes back - even stoping the clock.
I also have never had a good experience with symantec tech support, so for most problmes I do not even bother anymore.

As for graphics - to design a coverpage they include a basic designer - that is not quite WYSIWYG. It seems to be the same interface they have been using for 10 years. Layouts shift it is difficult to allign objects - just not what I would call a PRO tool.

I have not found much else on the market to do what WinFax will do however.

The biggest plusses are
Fax Merging (although the interface to my ACT database has never worked right and will not be included in the new versions of ACT)
Ease of compiling a fax from different applications - once the fax has been started, but not sent you can add pages from any program easily.

Useless product

Pros: A basic fax server

Cons: It is blocked from running on Windows 2003 Server

Review: Symantec has now passed Microsoft as being the most useless software company. They don't appear to have a "server" based fax offering, but block the use of WinFax Pro on servers.

We have servers in our main support room where the telephone lines and Internet access terminate. I can't believe we need to install a non-server with our servers to "serve" our fax requirement.

We had an older version of this product running on a Windows NT Server with no problems. After our upgrade to the new 10.0 release, it not only won't install, it does so in a very amateurish fashion. There are no warnings; no errors except "WinFax Printer Add Failed. Error Code -> 1930". Then the install application hangs and needs to be killed through task manager.

This is after it has tested the modem and done all of the set up activities.

What a piece of sh*t!

I'm suing these BASTARDS

Pros: No way I'm letting them rip me off with this fraudulent upgrade, they either pay up or I'll take legal action

Cons: This is in no way XP compatible as they are fraudulently misrepresenting.

CRASH CRASH CRASH CRASH

Pros: Sends faxes, when it works.

Cons: Unstable in XP. ABSOLUTELY. No patches, no fixes, no upgrades.

Works well, if it works

Pros: I have used WinFax in the past and found it very useful and effective.

Cons: Then I installed it on a computer that had XP installed on top of ME. The system immediately became unstable and regularly crashed on startup. Winfax however ran reasonably well. Then I put in a new hard drive and did a clean install of XP. Now when I

WinFax Pro 10.02, outlook 2002 and XP not works ALL

Pros:

Cons: I been using winfax pro 10.02 with outlook 2002 on windows xp pro. and I am not happy at all. Winfax Pro 10.02 seems having many problems with outlook 2002 and HP scanner/printer products. Not worth spending your money on this version (WinFax Pro 10.02)

Could be a great product - sadly is not

Pros: The obvious - great featureset...not many other options out there in this category...BUT

Cons: Unfortunately for my main fax-using client this package has eaten up about $8000.00 CDN of my time and sweat just to keep it running the last six months. The user has about 28000 faxes in the data folder. The user has tried to get her work done during per

Go back to 10.0

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I don't have WInFAx 10.02 but I do use 10.0. I have it installed on two XP boxes, Two Win 2K boxes, a 98 and Server 2003. No problems with installation, Hosting and client sides. The only thing I don't like about winfax is the fact that moving fax files from folder to folder seems to screw up the attached pages to the faxed documents. So I still have to be very carefull otherwise things will get messed.

WXP Compatible? Hahahahahah!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've sold and used Winfax since Delrina days. Each successive release from Symantec has been worse than the previous one. The last usable version, was 8.0. Today I tried installing 10.02 with XP Pro. Even the installation crashes, never mind the program. There is no way that 10.02 is even remotely close to XP compatibility. If anyone else is tempted, save yourself the time and hassle - forget it!

10.02 is NOT and XP product

Pros:

Cons:

Review: It is clear that Symantec made a type when they said this was an XP product. They must me mistaken because they wouldn't outright lie, would they? To be clear, you cannot use this with XP and Outlook 2002 without causing yourself significant distress. I have removed it from the system, which is also not an easy task...

Junk! Stay clear of Winfax!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I'm having to rebuild a Windows 2000 Server because of this product. On initial build of the system and install of Winfax everything was working fine. Upgrading the system with Service Pack 3 seemed to put Winfax into a tizzy. After many hours of messing with this product and following the suggestions of Winfax support I now have the luxury of a system that does not respond. Stay clear of this until Symantec decides to quit providing software that is flaky!

Thanks for sparing me

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Yesterday I saw a Staples ad offering WinFax Pro 10 for free after rebates and upgrade. Fortunately I read these reviews before I made the plunge. I've used WinFax Pro for years and it seems each release is a little more quirky and unstable than the previous one. For now I'm using a j2.com account to receive and bringing things to the office when I need to send (rarely). I think I'll stick with the status quo until somebody decides to release a rock-solid package that doesn't use all my memory, keep Outlook running all the time, fail to install on my W2K Server box, generate error messages for every action, etc.

User Rating: 4/10

does not work well with XP

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Worked wonderfully with ME when I upgraded to XP problems showed up everywhere.Symantec needs to re-engineer this program to work with XP
