"If I could have chosen 0, I would have!"
Pros: Cute, Fast & Cute.
Cons: Nearly everything about it.
Summary: Early in 2004, my company was in the market for 2 external harddrives for back-up purposes & I, personally, was in the market for the same reason. After much research, testimonial reading & spec comparison, i chose the LaCie D2 family. In the past 8 months, i have been responsible for the purchase of 2 120 GB & 2 250 GB harddrives. I have sent 2 back to the original retail store as they failed within 2 months. I have sent 2 back to LaCie for warranty repairs. So, out of 4 drives, I have had 4 replaced. This is a BAD track record. I am waiting for my personal drive to arrive back from LaCie, at which time I will sell on ebay & use the money to do some sort of online storage service that guarantees & backs up my data.
Aside from my woes with LaCie, I have heard *horror* stories from friends & colleagues about other manufacuter's hard drives... as well as other woes with iPods, memory sticks, USB minidrives, etc etc.... So, i am generally weary of all external storage devices. REMEMBER - redundancy is ALWAYS a good thing. DO NOT put all your eggs in one basket. And, NEVER assume something is fail-proof.

I have 2 250GB drives and one failed within 6 months. I made a mistake and didn't ask Lacie for help until the one year warranty was up. The second drive I stopped using very often. It was making funny noises and didn't want to lose anymore data. Lacie dose not seem to have much of a customer support.
It is too bad because the drive looks and feels so solid. It makes you feel the drive would last forever. -
Buyer beware!
In my previous reply to this review I wrote "I have had no problems with any of them." (I own four LaCie drives iv various capacities." Since posting that comment, one drive began to make worrisome noised, even failing to mount at one point. I bought a 500 GB LaCie and transferred all my data from the failing drive to it. Well, tonight the new drive failed completely, without warning. I tried everything suggested on the LaCie website, nothing worked.
Since these were my two newest drives, I can only assume that the quality of LaCie's product has declined.
I will not be buying another LaCie product. -
I have three of these drives. Not all are of the same storage capacity, but all are in the same product line. I have had no problems with any of them. The oldest is 4 years old, the newest is 15 months. My next drive will be a La Cie. Why switch from a proven product? Sorry for your bad experience, but I think it's an anomaly.

I worked for three weeks loading 900 GB of video on a 1TB Lacie. At this point all FireWire (400 and 800) ports failed. Lacie Tech support (there's an oxymoron) was decidedly unhelpful, inviting me to ship the drive back and they'd look at it. Since I was waiting for a client's check to arrive I didn't yet have funds available to purchase a second matching drive for back-up. I'm now looking to purchase several more drive. None of them will be Lacie.

We have 3 500gb drives & 2 250gb drives all have failed at least once & two of the larger ones have been replaced as well as repaired. It seems if they run for more than 8-10 hours they overheat & lose all the data. Fine if you switch it on, back-up or restore then shut it down but otherwise pretty much just a very expensive paper weight (or 5 paper weights).

I ordered my drive from MacWarehouse. It came in two days. I installed it very easily and am using the FireWire 800 interface. All necessary cables came with it. I've been using it for at least six months now and have not had a single problem with it. It is an extremely fast drive and I'm very satisfied with it.
You should consider another source for your equipment. I wouldn't give up on LaCie as they have been around a long time. I previously ordered an internal drive from them (thru MacWarehouse also) and it has been running well for about six years. -
If you're having issues with USB drives and memory sticks, you have issues other than drive failures. Hard drives are one thing since they have mechanical parts, but memory sticks, USB drives and the smaller iPODs have no moving parts so if things are breaking on those, it's probably user error...
