"You will be sorry!"
Pros: fast shipping
Cons: everything else
Summary: You have to be a total fool to buy this product. I thought this would be a replacement for my iriver storage. One week into it, the power went out in the building. Everything else came up (pc printer, etc..) but all the data on the hard drive was lost (50 gigs of work data). When I called Maxtor tech support they said that if the drive is not shut down properly (ie, you turn it off or the power goes out) it will corrupt the drive (you will loose all your data). Come on! I live in FL and we have power loss all the time. Even if you had a power back up, that only lasts 15 mins. So what if the power wne tout in the midle of the night? You would wake up to all your data corrupted because , as tech support says, "you didnt shut it down properly", lol. I can kick, drop, and unplug my iriver improperly and it has never failed. Just wish they made a 250-300 gig model.

I have had this unit for a long period of time. It does get warm if left on for an extended period of time. I only use it as an electronic safe for the safe keeping of my electronic data. Would you keep the physical safe's door in your home safe always open? I think not so why leave your data stored on your Maxtor constantly open to attack from gremlins (power failures) or hackers by constantly leaving it on? If you shut it down when you are done using and/or transfering the data stored on the Maxtor it should take you less than 15 minutes to find the off and on switch if there is a power failure. If you have that many power failures I guess you must already have a power supply back up especially living in a place like Florida with all the gremlins that cause those power failures.
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure so using the Maxtor for it's intended purpose, storage, will eliminate any over heating problems that are prevelant with most external hard drives and cause the early demise of the unit or loss of the data stored on it.
Hey I am open for suggestion so if anyone knows of a perfect single external storage unit without me having to sift through a mountain of DVDRWs let me know and I will take a look. Remember one should scan data for gremlins or viruses even if transfering it to a DVDRW so what I do is not alot of extra work when you compare turning the Maxtor on and off with sifting through 300GBs of DVDRWs. Do the math that is about 60 DVDRWs give or take a few which is still more data than I care to sift through manually.
Sometimes our problems can be prevented with just a little foresight like a power supply back up, as you suggested, and not leaving your Maxtor on 24-7 if you are not there. I could never understand why someone would? -
This Maxtor onetouch II is very unreliable. I bought it 5 months ago and now it just went dead.It just stopped spinning. Worst is Maxtor customer service won't repair it. So whatever files you saved in there is gone. I read other reviews from consumer and they had the same problem. SO BEWARE, YOU BUY IT. YOU'LL BE SORRY...........
