"Drive Crashed. Lacie Tech support is a complete joke."

    on February 2, 2005

    Pros: NAS drive. Big. Fast.

Cons: My lacie 500gb ethernet dNAS drive crashed 6 months after purchase due to error with the embedded windows XP. Lacie only offers one support option in warranty - mail it to them at your expense, they erase and reformat drive. They don't care about trying t

My $1200 LaCie tape-back drive model 300724 failed 13 months after purchase. Tech support folks said they would see what they could do since the drive was just out of warrantee. Instead I got the following e-mail, "Unfortunately, the drive is past its one year warranty and we are unable
to repair it. We do not perform out-of-warranty repairs as we often no
longer have parts and it is usually more cost effective to purchase a
new unit. Depending on what is wrong with the drive, parts may be
salvageable. We are unable to assist with any of this, but if the
mechanism itself is dead, a new one can be placed inside the case. If
the mechanism is still good, it may be installed elsewhere-either in a
computer or inside a new empty case.

Should you require professional data recovery, we recommend DriveSavers
    at 800-440-1904.

We do not offer replacement parts for any of our products due to
    agreements with our suppliers.

    Regards,
    Technical Support"

Can you afford to buy a drive from a company that offer so little support for their products? In effect, this dive cost $100 per month to use. Can't think of a good reason to buy another one from LaCie. Please let us know if you have had similar problems with this or other LaCie products.
