"Best NAS I have used so far, good performance"

    by mark_dickson on December 26, 2008

Pros: Speed - compared to other consumer NAS devices, this one is very quick. Flexibility - you can use 1 or 2 drives of any size you want. Price - for the money, its great that you get a fast NAS with basic RAID abilities

Cons: User permissions could be a little more straight forward, a speedy eSATA port would be great to add additional storage

Summary: I have two LaCie NAS drives and this Dlink DNS-321 NAS hooked up to my network currently and this is by far my favorite because of its flexibility and its speed. It is way faster than either LaCie drives I have and tests very well compared to other NAS drives on sites such as Small Net Builder (a little faster than its DNS-323 sibling overall too). Don't get me wrong, there is still room for improvement with its speed as I have an old computer with Ubuntu server running as a network file server and its gig ports blow even this Dlink away, but compared to other reasonably priced consumer NAS drives this is great.

Using my wireless n network (Dlink DIR-655) I get a solid 6MBps/48Mbps with 7.5MBps/60Mbps peaks. Over my gig ethernet connection I get a solid 14MBps/112Mbps with 17MBps/136Mbps peaks. I have a 1TB WD green drive in there at the moment, one piece of advice - if you are going to use it with only 1 drive at first, put it in the right drive bay as it will make it easier down the road as with 2 drives in there the right bay is volume 1 but with 1 drive in it, whichever side you use it called volume 1.

An eSATA port would have been great to add more storage and the USB port could have been put to more use. With a speedier processor and/or RAM the performance could have been improved, but for the price it is probably the best device currently available and I'd buy another one tomorrow if I needed more network storage which I'm sure I will down the road.
