"Iomega's FLOP"
Pros: Large Drive, Fast Fire Connection
Cons: Noizy, if they even remember to put the fan in, SLOW USB
Summary: Well my experience with Iomega has not been good contrary to the Cnet review.
I purchased the 400 series because of glowing reviews but the first unit(yes there were multiple) had a cooling fan problem. When the unit activated the fan, it made a horrendous clicking noise from the blades touching something inside the box. I returned that unit only to receive one without a fan. There was a BIG empty spot where the side fan was and is supposed to be. One would think the second one would have been checked.
I was charged shipping which was not refunded.
So based on 2 bad units in a row, I can only give this unit a dysmal review, and only question if they even have a quality control department, or people that take pride in their work.
Iomega did not do anything to improve custumer satisfaction on their end. Both times when I called them to exchange the product I was told, in a cold robot, operator, type voice that I can return the unit and buy a new one. No appologies, no offer for free shipping and to add insult to injury, original shipping costs for the unit would not be refunded.
I reccomend buying from someone else that cares.
Sory IOMEGA But it just looks pretty on the outside. Its rotten inside.Updated
I did call IOMEGA again after the original post. This time I spoke to the manager "Christie", whom was pleasant, patient, and helpful. She was able to defray my original,(Incoming)shipping expenses and provide a discount which was appropriate after the 2 faulty units. Call me a fool, taking into account my own post, but I decided to give IOMEGA a 3rd, LAST try.
Note: I went through Customer Service NOT Tech support. If you go through tech support with trouble for a NEW unit...all you will get if you decide to xchange...is a REFURBISHED unit. Tech Support Claims the refurbished units are better because they are tested. I am not sure how they can get away with sending a refurbished unit for a new one. Tech Support's claim also leaves into question: Dont they test the NEW UNITS???
I'll let you know how my 3rd NEW unit works out.Updated
Correction!
The hard drive I purchased is actually a 500gb series but identical to the 400GB TripleIntf. in the looks and side fan etc.
Contrary to my own oppinion, and out of couriosity, I purchased a 3rd unit after a more pleasant and willing manager convinced me:
15% discount, appology, and refunded my shipping.
The 3rd unit had no flaws!!!!
Works extremely fast on firewire 400 AND as all reviews indicate....Sllllooow on USB.
Is is not too noisy, on occasion the side fan comes on but its acceptable. Backup software seems excellent.
