Performance
We tested the LaCie 2big USB 3.0 with both USB 3.0 and USB 2.0, in both RAID 1 and RAID 0 configurations, and it did very well.
In tests with USB 3.0, the drive scored 77.7MBps in writing and 114.4MBps in reading for the RAID configuration. This is the setup that offers protection against single hard-drive failure at the expense of speed and storage. In RAID 0 configuration, which is optimized for speed and the maximum amount of storage, the LaCie did slightly faster with 80.6MBps and 114.6MBps for write and read, respectively. These numbers are among the top three for writing and topped our chart for reading.
When used with USB 2.0, the 2big registered 27.7MBps in writing and 32.2MBps in reading with RAID 1. With RAID 0 these numbers are increased to 27.8MBps and 42MBps for write and read, respectively. Again, these are very high scores in comparison with other drives.
In all, we were happy with the drive's performance. We also noticed that the drive remained cool during even heavy loads, which means that its rugged and groove-laden design works as intended.

Service and support
Unlike other storage devices such as the Network Space 2 or the Minimus that come with a two-year warranty, LaCie backs the 2big USB with a three-year warranty, which is shorter than the five-year warranties that other hard-drive vendors offer, but generous nonetheless. The company's telephone support is offered Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. PT. At LaCie's Web site, you can download software that accompanies the device. There you'll also find its GPL source code, and you can access documentation, a knowledge base, FAQs, and other ways to contact Lacie.
