In the CNET Labs' read/write tests, the d2 Quadra proved itself to be a speedy drive. Over a FireWire 800 connection, it wrote our 10GB folder of mixed file types in 6 minutes, 7 seconds and read back the same folder in 6 minutes, 41 seconds.
A front-mounted blue LED button indicates power and activity, and it can be programmed as a one-touch button to launch any application. There's also a three-way power switch that lets you manually turn the drive on and off or set it to auto so that it powers up and down with the connected PC (must be connected via USB or FireWire for this option).

"All show no go" By ynkefn999
Pros: Looks great. Solid metal casing. Easy-to-use backup software.
Cons: Other than the fact that the Quadra failed without warning after one year of service, it worked fine. Fortunately, I was diligent with my paperwork and have warranty coverage.
"2 years 2 crashes. Don't buy zone!" By tucaw
Pros: when it worked it was quiet and unassuming.
Cons: 2 year and two crashes, too often. I had to pay to ship it to LACIE the first time to get it fixed.
Summary: a friend of mine owns a cheaper WD for longer than I had the LACIE, the WD is still working even after being shipped cross country a year ago.
