"Excellent piece of kit" on by onerichie
Pros: Fast, Large Capacity, Good Price
Cons: VERY sensitive
Summary: I just wanna settle the score here on behalf of Maxtor. I know a couple of people who have been using this drive for a very long time now, one of whom is a media studies student who keeps litterally hundreds of gigabytes of DV on this, which is critical to his coursework. I myself have been using the kit for about 4 months now and have had no problems. So why do I keep logging onto forums and finding that the Maxtor OneTouch II is taking a hammering? Because the internet is full of noobs is why. Im astonished at some of the things I read in this forum "failed after 3 days", "corrupted data after a month" etc. I simply couldnt figure out why these people were writing these things. Until yesterday that is, when one of my Maxtor OneTouch II owning friends (not the media studies one) knocked the hard drive on its side. Not onto the floor, just onto the desk. Now it doesnt work at all, wont even spin up.
People, listen up. Just because this hard drive is external does not mean you can handle it in the same way as flash media based storage...its still a hard drive inside, it has extremely delicated moving parts. Simply moving the unit while it is switched on and working can cause total failure. This may sound like a bad point, but try using your internal drive and taking it out and shaking it whilst its working on data. The same will happen.
This kit is NOT bad. I cannot stress that enough. The reviews on here are very inaccurate. The kit will fail if you move it whilst its on, or knock it or drop it etc, because its a hard drive and thats what they do. Please people, RTFM -
"Lost data after 2 weeks" on by rfalck
Pros: Don't find any pros on this product
Cons: over heats, loses data
Summary: I lost 100gigs of data using this hard drive.
After 2 weeks of using the hard dirve it couldn't connect to my computer (Windows XP).
Called customer support and the only thing that they said is we would help you reformat your drive. They didn't care about my lost data.
I do not reccomend this product. -
"You will be sorry!" on by medium21
Pros: fast shipping
Cons: everything else
Summary: You have to be a total fool to buy this product. I thought this would be a replacement for my iriver storage. One week into it, the power went out in the building. Everything else came up (pc printer, etc..) but all the data on the hard drive was lost (50 gigs of work data). When I called Maxtor tech support they said that if the drive is not shut down properly (ie, you turn it off or the power goes out) it will corrupt the drive (you will loose all your data). Come on! I live in FL and we have power loss all the time. Even if you had a power back up, that only lasts 15 mins. So what if the power wne tout in the midle of the night? You would wake up to all your data corrupted because , as tech support says, "you didnt shut it down properly", lol. I can kick, drop, and unplug my iriver improperly and it has never failed. Just wish they made a 250-300 gig model.

"Un-reliable - 2 disk crashs within days" on by cmccarty
Pros: Nothing pro, not reliable enough to see.
Cons: Crashed quickly
Summary: On a project requiring movement of a few terrabytes of data, 7 maxtor one touch II 300 gb drives were purchased. Disks were connected to Windows XP SP II and Windows 2000 Advanced server. The drives initially formatted (NTFS) well and loaded well. On connecting to the next machines the drives failed within 5 hours, with some files being corrupted, then all files and eventually the entire disk being corrupted. The failure was witnessed as the disk was being used. Once its gone, its gone. This sets the project back a week while replacements and re-copies are done. 2 out of seven disks becoming corrupted is too high a failure rate. All machines used have had other portable disks attached and have experience 0 failures with these drives. Maxtor did reply quickly, to say a 3rd party recovery service is only hope of getting data back off drives. Nervous as backups are on Maxtors portables as well.

"An Exellent Drive Getting Bad Press..." on by dorsm365
Pros: HUGE Capacity, Good Looks, Many Options
Cons: Cooling Not Good
Summary: Geez, what is going on here. Just because the drive is portable you think you can knock it around? The only reason internal hard drives are not damaged is because you aren't moving them around alot. Although the cooling is not efficient, which probably contributes to some reliability issues, this type of drive cannot be cooled like an internal drive and therefore will not perform like an internal drive. When I know I will be using it for a long period of time I will point a small fan at it and I will have no problems. In short, it is the best storage solution out there, unless you want to pull apart your computer...
