"90 day warranty=don't buy" on by compsdo

    Pros: Cheap, cheap, cheap

Cons: It died. And it has no off switch!

Summary: A hard drive has one function. Store my stuff. It's sitting on the desk and is not moved, b ut 6 months later, it doesn't come on, and actually prevents my computer from starting. All the data has been lost (which is why I bought two of these useless things), so I have not lost everything. But it's just completely unaccaptable. If I was Maxtor and this happened even once, I would find out what the problem was and fix it. It's happened to many other people that I have talked to. DON'T BUY THIS!

    "Unreliable" on by quango2001

Pros: When it was running works fine.

    Cons: Unreliable, uncaring customer support.

Summary: After a year and storing a ton of memory on the drive it left me with a code 10 error, and no way to fix it. Better off with more reliable brand.

"DO NOT BUY!" on by JimmyVee

Pros: inexpensive, but you get what you pay for I guess

Cons: NO ON/OFF SWITCH, KILLS DATA, need I say more?

Summary: The worst feature of this worthless drive is its lack of an on/off switch. Presumably we are meant to eject it from the desktop and pull out the power cord from the unit every time we shut our computer off. Otherwise, from my experience, the drive self-destructs. I backed up the contents of the drive once to a bunch of DVDs (bought a DVD burner for that purpose, in fact, which felt like a waste of my money, given that the external drive was meant to be my backup, not DVDs). Erased and reformatted the drive, as per the recommendations of the help line person. A month or so later, the drive died completely and would not mount at all (and in fact kept my computer from starting, while it tried to 'read' the drive, I assume). Lots of valuable data was lost, as far as I can tell. Oh well, that's what I get for buying a cheap piece of crap. I bought a Fantom Drive 200 GB drive after the Maxtor died, and it is grat. Solid, and reliable, and best of all, it has a power switch. DO NOT BUY THE MAXTOR. IT SUCKS.

    "Dead! Data lost!" on

    Pros: Affordable

Cons: even my attempt to spend $1-2k on sending the drive to a data recovery company has failed. The company just called and told me that the top platter has visible damage. The tech was surprised. Asked if I had dropped the unit while it was running. Told him
