"Excellent as backup / archive drive"
Pros: Large capacity
Cons: USB 2.0 not speedy, FAT32
Summary: Excellent product for what it is: an add-on hard disk to expand storage for archives / backups. If you want a larger hard disk to use as a primary disk, no USB 2.0 product will be acceptable. Look for other interfaces (e.g. eSATA, etc.). The USB 2.0 interface has a theoretical limit of 60MB/s (480Mbps). Measured performance (non-scientific) is around 25MB/s - reasonable considering that all 8 of my USB ports are full. It is comparable to other USB2.0 products. Biggest complaint is that the disk is pre-formatted with the FAT32 filesystem (with a 32KB cluster size?). I reformatted the disk with NTFS w/ 4KB cluster size to improve disk space efficiency (i.e. reduce slack space) and to take advantage of the advanced features and higher reliability / performance / security of NTFS. I'm not using WD's bundled backup software.

Why didn't you use their software for backup? What did you use? Thanks, Margaret
