"Trouble with Mac"

Cons Goes to sleep on mac, hanging sustem and forcing hard restart. Bad for computer and drive. Not good for dealing with data you care about.
Summary It is amazing that cnet keeps writing that these drives work well with mac. Tere are countless threads in support forums about the fact that this drive goes to sleep after a few minutes on a mac and can't be awakened. It hangs the system and you have to do a hard restart. This is especially horrible when trying to back up precious data to this drive. All of a sudden you have to hard restart everything and hope your data is okay. Seagate has offered some utilities to try and address the issue, but no one reports it succeeding. Some users have purchased the FireWire adapter to try to avoid the problem. Again, no conclusive results. And for some reason, I get faster speeds using the USB 3.0 (which runs at 2.0 on mac) than the FireWire. Not sure why this is.
If seagate could solve this problem or if you are lucky and don't have the drive fall asleep on you, then the drive is fast and flexible. But I am not sure that is a bet worth taking with precious data. I cannot recommend this purchase for anyone with a mac. -

Cons Very slow at USB 2.0. Support is terrible. The bundled backup software seems, at first, to be easy and convenient, but doesn't perform.
Summary I have a 2 TB version of this drive. It is USB 2.0 and painfully slow on a fast 3 ghz. duo processor computer. It is painfully slow trying to navigate through the folders on the drive.
One more thing, I really don't understand how the CNN reviewer of this drive can come to such an opposite conclusion. I'd really like to hear how the reviewer went about testing this drive.
The bundled software does not perform. I've had 2 problems with it. The first time the drive ran out of space. The software is supposed to get rid of your oldest backups to make space. It doesn't. You can't go in and manually delete old backups. To fix this you have to reformat the drive. Bye bye backups, only to wait until the next time it fills up.
The 2nd problem was that the right click context menu was missing. I asked for the registry settings or a fix so it can be restored. In order to find the versions of a file on the Seagate drive you need to go to the original file and right click it. A context menu is supposed to come up which tells you where the backups of that file is located on the Seagate drive. Without the menu it is very difficult to find the file(s).
That request was never addressed. I uninstalled the software and when I tried to re-install it told me there wasn't enough space on the protected drive. I figured out how to get around that but never got the right click context menu back. While poking around I came to realize that it had not been backing up all of my files.
The experience with support has not been positive. My questions were never addressed. For the 2nd problem support told me to check the version of my BIOS and that possibly my "C" drive was not compatible with my system. They also told me to install some other software but that it had some limitations so I should get some flash drives to put on the files that I really needed.
Bottom line, I wouldn't buy Seagate again. Like someone else in this blog said, I'll stick with Western Digital. I'd have to agree.

Fragile piece of garbage
Ugly paperweightSummary I have a windows7 computer and a windowsXP computer. I plugged it in and loaded like 4gb onto it. Took it to my XP comp, loaded another 4gb onto it. Tried to upload the XP contents into my win7 computer and the drive isnt being recognized anymore. Once got a prompt to reformat but lose all data. COMPLETE GARBAGE i have to troubleshoot and contact customer support within 24 hours of purchasing this? Never again.

Summary I loaded it up twice with all my video files and both times my Mac quit recognizing it after it was 2/3 full. I had to spend an extra $75 just to buy the R-Studio data recovery software, which I highly recommend. Evidently Seagate doesn't like negative comments as they refused to post mine on their website. I'll be going back to WD drives, which I've never had a problem with!
