  • "Great "Flex"ible Ext HDD but Memeo Software Fails"
    on by jake.jacobs

Pros *The array of swappable interface cables are perfect to tailor to your current (or future) PC and/or Mac.
*This HDD is a true PnP device w nominal user configuration required.

    Cons *Cheap casing.
*(optional) Memeo Backup application fails miserably.

    Summary Model: FreeAgentĀ® GoFlex? (non-Pro) Ultra-portable Drive.

    The bad:
-Wish the case was more rugged and sturdy. But for the low price, what can you say?!
-During set-up, I downloaded the (optional) entire Memeo Back-up, Sync, Share, and Send applications. What a mistake! After numerous backups failed and bringing my computer to a near death, I uninstalled the additional apps, restarted, and reconfigured using just the basic Seagate Dashboard. Now, life is good again.

    The Good:
-As the editors and other review sites claim, this ext. HDD is truly flexible by means of connectivity to "your" computer type and interface. What do I mean? I have an old rig (Intel P4 2.4 GHz single core CPU w 1024 of RAM running XP 2003) but take great care of it. I am careful of what and how I connect to it. The fact I have the option to use and can select from a battery of cables (e.g., 3.0, eSATA, or Firewire 800) when I upgrade my computer puts my mind at ease. In addition, I applaud Seagate for having a mainstream ext. HDD in NTFS format compatible in both Windows and Mac OS. No need to format to FAT32 and limited to a 4 GB file size. Note: reformatting to HFS+ is required for TimeMachine software users however Memeo Backup (if it doesn't fail for you) is very similar.
-No configuration required. A simple Plug-and-Play device straight out the box.
-This 2.5" drive is small, lightweight and easy to disconnect then take on the go.

This is my first, but not last, Seagate external drive. Receives 4/5 stars due to minor items mentioned in the Cons section above.
I did a lot of research prior to purchase and found nothing better, based on price and my needs. No regrets after purchase and I have strongly recommend this to my friends.

  • "Great storage capacity for the size and cost"
    on by jw appleby

Pros small size, range of connections, lightweight.

This drive is fairly quick using the Firewire 800 on a MacBook Pro (quad core).

Cons I would have liked a faster drive and a little more cache memory
USB 2 is a little slow (that's the nature of the beast)

Summary I use it for storage of photographs in the field so I have 'instant' backup of the data on my laptop hard drive. I carry the drive in one of the lens compartments of my camera case and have had no problems with the abuse that it takes there. The drive spins up and is ready when I need it, I have had no software problems and use it on Linux, Mac OS and Windows (Vista and 7). Overall, I have used this drive for about 3 months and am completely happy with the cost to performance of the product.

  • "hi, pass on this brand;"
    on by hand-ball

    Pros nice appearance.

Cons 4 drives bought over the past 3-years all failed...3-were the 750 gig flex drive and 1 was the 1.5 tera-byte flex drive. the 1.5 failed this past week; looking for a new reliable drive mfg.

Summary pass on seagate flex drives.

  • "Unreadable backup files"
    on by beckst27

    Pros lots of storage

Cons This thing will change the name and extension of files when they are deep within the folder structure, which makes the backup files unusable.
I got this thing a day ago, and I already regret it!

    Summary Just Don't do it!

    Updated on Dec 23, 2011

The problem is the Memeo software... Just don't install it and you'll be fine.

  • "Lots of storage, but the Memeo software is terrible."
    on by OnTheBeachInSoCal

    Pros 1.5TB, small, light.

Cons Memeo Instant Backup: have hundreds of thousands of files, including text files, images, videos, songs, word docs, spreasheets, etc.: if the directory/file name are 'too long' the backup software simply changes the extension to .ptl. To restore, you have

Summary Bought this at Costco for $109, so for its size, it's a great deal BUT would recommend not using the Memeo Instant Backup software.
