Great Value

Pros: Build Quality is okay.
Price is a bargain.
Power Brick size is manageable enough to carry around along with the Hard Drive itself.

Cons: Could have been a tad faster.
Don't even try to watch a movie off of it with it on the same table you're using because this thing vibrates like crazy. You can very much hear it spinning, too.

Review: Good value for your buck. Fast enough to play HD movies from it on your TV or PC, but not fast enough to do daily backups on.

Western Digital vs. Seagate

Pros: ??????????????

Cons: ?????????????

Review: Just bought a Western Digital 1TB because my Seagate 320GB was a piece of crap so far WD usb cable seems way more sturdy than SG and seems alot more durable but we'll see.

No problems, does things as advertised

Pros: Quiet, easy to use software, plug and play

Cons: None so far

Review: I've had this mirror drive for about 2 years, and it's worked as advertised. The software is not as intuititive as I'd like, but the learning curve was simple enough. I use two of these drives as the primary backup for our two laptops, and so far, no issues. I am surprised at all the complaints, and in reading them, I'm a bit nervous now, but so far, no issues.

Several complained of lost data. I don't understand that. If it's a mirror drive and you used it as such, you should be able to recover data from the mirror. Perhaps these users did not use it as a mirror drive, which is easy enough to do.

I have had no issues.

Pros: The drive is dependable as long as you let it get air. I am not sure how the other guy managed to get two 500 gig drives out of a 1 tb mirrored drive?? 2x1tb = 1tb mirrored.

Cons: only as fast as USB will allow.

Review: Good drive for the price. Make sure it has enough air space around it.

ABSOLUTE GARBAGE!

Pros: It's size and price.

Cons: After trying this on my desk top and a brand new Sony Vaio lap top, both of which had problems with this drive. I returned it to the store, bought a seagate and have had no problems.

AVOID THIS PRODUCT!

Review: Multiple attempts were made to install the drive along with an hour on the phone with customer service which ended in the tech telling me the problem was my computer. This drive makes a better paperweight..

AVOID THIS PRODUCT!

Failed within 5 months

Pros: 2 Terabytes is a great size for storing massive amounts of photographs.

Cons: I had my data rescued and found images on it that were not mine. The only explanation for it is they sold me a hard drive as new that was actually refurbished. None of my rescued images were usable after data recovery so save yourself the expense.

Review: Very disappointed and don't trust Western Digital anymore.

Terrible! Do Not use the software!!!!

Pros: Big extra storage.

Cons: Software will render your computer virtually useless!!!

Review: Western Digital's My Book World 4T will make your HP computer virtually unusable!
We purchased the MBW this spring and installed the discovery software on a brand new HP Pavillion laptop running Vista. The computer started exhibiting problems such as Not being able to shut down. Shortly after the USB ports stopped working. They would work temporarily when we did a hard start up but if you moved the laptop they would stop working. Recently The sound card is on mute and will not come out of it.
We installed the software on another HP Pavillion running Windows 7 thinking maybe that was the problem. The same problems started occurring with the Win & laptop immediately.
We have called WD support and they told us this was an isolated incident and they knew of no way to fix it. They claimed it was something other than their program and refused assistance.
We have uninstalled everything we can find related to WD and run every repair software we can find. Windows now has issues installing drivers and creating restore points now.

Word to the wise! If you have an HP laptop and you are considering this hard drive, think again! DO NOT USE THE CD INCLUDED. IT WILL RENDER YOUR LAPTOP UNUSABLE! And you wont get any help from WD!!!!

The worst computer product I've ever purchased

Pros: I have nothing good to say about this product

Cons: Failure of these drive is widespread
Software is way below par
Not a reliable way to store data

Review: Just check out the WD forum to see why you should stay away from WD external drives. Plain and simple these products should be recalled and customers should reimbursed - BUYER BEWARE!

ABSOLUTE GARBAGE!

Pros: NONE, IT DOESN'T WORK

Cons: BOUGHT ONE (IT WENT OUT), REPLACED IT, THAT ONE DIED WITHIN A MONTH TOO, IT'S A BAD PRODUCT! I NOW HAVE OVER $2000 IN LOST REVENUE AND HAVE NO WAY OF RECOVERING ALL OF MY STORED CUSTOMER FILES. THANKS WESTERN DIGITAL FOR DESTROYING MY BUSINESS!

Review: IF YOU WANT TO STORE ANYTHING IMPORTANT..... DO NOT BUY A WD MYBOOK..... YOU'RE BUYING A VERY EXPENSIVE PAPERWEIGHT!

Can't stress enough: DON'T BUY

Pros: Can't really think of anything.

Cons: Hideous design
Undependable
WILL die on you

Review: I had my WD for about half a year, and it was in a spot with plenty of air and I never transported it around. It still decided to die on me for no reason, though, taking gigabytes of irreplaceable data and litterally thousands of hours of work with it. Seriously, just save yourself the anguish and just stay as far away from WD as you possibly can.

Expensive and not a good product.

Pros: absolutely nothing

Cons: I didn't like that it didn't work when I needed it to. All the info on it is lost and my computer crashed and lost everything. So the reason for having it is mute. TERRIBLE product. Will never buy WD again.

Review: I bought it and backed up my computer. I checked to make sure everything went on to the external drive. I then put it back in the box and on a shelf above my desk. I then started mostly using my laptop. Didn't really think about the desk top much until it crashed and I lost everything. Took the external drive off the shelf and tried to load stuff onto the computer again but it didn't work. The light only came on for a second. By this time the warranty of course, is out. So, the reason I bougt it was for this and it didn't work. So, I still lost everything. It only worked the one time. I cooresponded with the company, but they stopped emailing back. They do NOT stand behind their product. When I spend this much on a product (I bought the 500 GB) I expect it to work when I need it. NOT work once and then them say oh well. Now I have to buy another one?? It sure won't be a Western Digital. I am getting a Seagate. Just checked them out. They rate higher than Western Digital and prices look good.

Good drive but bad USB

Pros: God drive reliable

Cons: Even so the drive is good and reliable the USB interface is not. Especially Mac computers seams to have problems with the USB dropping signals and other problems that disappear by inserting the drives in a NEW USB HOUSING from other companies.

Review: Buy the Drives take them out of the existing Housing and insert them into a housing form another company which have better USB connection (about $20) and you have a good Backup system.

don't buy it

Pros: not aware of any

Cons: unintuitive. confusing. hard to use unless you are very computer savvy

Review: I bought this looking for an easy way to back up my computer. Bad choice. Installation and setup are not user friendly, and Western Digital is constantly looking for ways to sell you its other products. I'm sure there is a way to make this work, but somebody out there has to be doing it better. I am extremely unhappy with this product and may very well wind up ditching it for something else, wasting the money I spent to buy it. Avoid!!

Works as intended. Dependable.

Pros: 1) Realatively inexpensive for an external mirrored drive 2) Easy to use 3) Dependable 4) Relatively quiet

Cons: 1) Bulky 2) Not the fastest drive but on par with other external drives 3) Shinny Plastic 4) Huge blue activity light can be annoying if left operating in a dark room, but it's not as bad as past models with the round ring.

Review: I've owned several MyBook drives over the years and have never had a problem with a single one. In fact, I keep all my data on an external drive now rather than on my local system. So when the mirrored version became available, I picked one up for home figuring it would be ideal to have the data stored on two drives.. And I liked it so much, I picked up a couple for work.

DO NOT BUY WESTERN DIGITAL HARD DRIVES

Pros: It's heavy enough that the papers under it don't blow away even with an industrial fan.

Cons: Ugly paperweight.
Unreliable piece of garbage.
Not even worth the half star that cnet made me give it.

Review: It has problems connecting with any of my three computers. It will connect sometimes, but even then it will not stay connected. Sometimes my computers say it cannot identify the usb device. If by chance it does connect it loses the connection intermittently. It was truthfully the most worthless thing I've bought that wasn't in a quarter machine.

Do Not BUY!!!

Pros: While it worked for 3 months, not a problem

Cons: Uploaded 365 GB of files, folders, and photos. Opened it up one day and found one folder with absolutely nothing in it. Called support and they just said it was corrupted and I needed to reformat it. Upsetting to say the least.

Review: For the amount of drive space, the price can't be beat. The reason you purchase a hard drive like this is specifically to back up your information. This hard drive has one job to do and it fails miserably at it. Do not purchase this product.

My 1 TB MyBook Just Died !!!!

Pros: great storage and network access including from the Internet

Cons: The CPU circuit board suffered unexpected power problems and does not boot up anymore!!!!!! Drives OK - I pulled them out, reformatted and reused the pair of 500 GB SATA drives but the main circuit board is now just e-waste!!!

Review: Great product while it works but be prepared for the agony of power problems - I can confirm the other user's report that the WD MyBook 1 TB suffers power failures and took a bunch of my digital photos and music down with it!!!!. Anthony Maw, Vancouver, Canada, www.anthonymaw.com

Pros: Absolutely nothing

Cons: Crashing is it's best trait not to mention loosing all of your most valuable informatin. WARNING, Do not buy this junk. No feedback, no support, no information.

Review: Craps out, won't power back on. VERY POOR power source. Will NEVER buy another western digital product of ANY kind. Also cannot access any way of product support to resolve this problem, (all about profit for WD)

Pretty dependable. I have it for 1 year and no problem.

Pros: Pretty decent for its price, i have not encounter any start up problem. It always is connected to my computer and works the way I want it.

Cons: a little bulky,

Review: Nice hard drive for backing up all your files, but if you have a lot of music and pictures, i would suggest might as well go for a bigger storage. But if you just have files and data, it is pretty good.

WD My Book = My Agony

Pros: While it worked, it was quiet

Cons: Failure, unpredictable and total, but consistent with my previous two WD My Book HDs

Review: Please be warned! I just chucked my second Western Digital 500 GB My Book drive within 15 months after it failed, conveniently for WD, three months after the warranty expiration. THIS drive was a replacement for a previous WD My Book 500 GB drive which failed, miraculously that time, while within the warranty period. Because of their unreliability, I would NEVER, EVER purchase another WD drive, even if they were the last remaining manufacturers of HDs and my only alternative were to backup onto 3.5" floppies! Get the point? Save yourself unmitigated computer agony and certain data loss- avoid WD like the plague!"

WARNING-All WD my books have been having power up probs

Pros: Small and easy to operate (when it was working)

Cons: Simply dont buy any WD external hardrive.. They have known problems and a very high failure rate. Maybe cnet can run a poll?

Review: Have just called WD as my 1 t mybook has suddenly stopped working. no power at all. They said to return to my place of purchase and see what can be done. I asked about the data and they told me to call a data recovery place here in Sydney. Having just spoken to them they said this is a very common problem. They have had up to 30 wd mybooks in one month! In good faith I purchased this product... I have all my tax info stored on this, agreements, company logo's, spreadsheets and much more. Now I have only one option... pay up to $1000.00AUD to have my data recovered. Just avoid this product at all cost or like me... live to regret it.
