  • "WD MyBook Is Very Temperamental and Unstable"
    on by MikePS1

Pros None. The most important thing a drive should do is protect your data. This drive is very temperamental and unstable.

Cons You will lose your data. It's only a matter of time.

Summary Despite minimal use, my MyBook 2TB self-destructed after I tried to access it when my laptop was woken from sleep mode. Apparently, it is common for WD drives to mess with their partitioning when not properly shut down. So, if a laptop goes into sleep mode or you have to force it to shut down, you risk the My Book self-destructing? I can't access my data and now have to spend $500 to $2000 to recover it. THINK TWICE BEFORE PURCHASING ANY WD PRODUCT. HEED THE WARNING OF ALL THE BAD REVIEWS ON CNET> THEY'RE THERE FOR A REASON!!!

  • "Reliably Unreliable!"
    on by 2N3O

    Pros It's 4TB, that's it!

Cons It runs hot so you need a really cool room to work with it; I'm using this as storage for processing video files then at the middle of the processing, it will just disconnects itself, ***?! Just wasted a day's work!

Summary Don't buy this! It's an effin' waste of money! Better stick with My Book Essential, I have 3 3TB and got no problems with them.

  • "WS Smartware Uses Too Much CPU and Memory Resources"
    on by ceetee888

Pros WD drives are great as external drives

Cons WD Smartware Software needs work badly.

Summary I use two different models of Western Digital drives but since the release of version 1.5.1.6 in Aug 2011, the Western Digital Western Smartware software used too much CPU and memory resources causing the system slow down tremendously. There are many use complaints on the issues but Western Digital still did not solve them after 5 months of the last software release. If you decide to purchase Western Digital drives to back up your files, look into these software issues prior to making your purchasing decision; otherwise these drives work fine as high capacity external drives.

  • "It worked right out of the box with my Mac."
    on by morris.davis

Pros Its been connected to my machine for more than a +years and have not let me down yet. Now that I posted this I'll crash.

Cons I should have got a bigger one and I wished it was cheaper. I have external 8TBs and out of space. I need another two drives!

Summary These drives are like crack cocaine. You buy one and you'll want more.
