"Very Disappointing"on by TOMOLENA
Pros Cool looking...That's about it.
Cons USB port VERY fragile.
Summary Had this about a year...long enough to store a massive DVD collection (over 500 movies). The USB port broke off. The techno-nerd at the computer store told me this happens quite often. Now I have no way to recover the files.
Pros Sleek design, silent and fast.
Cons Can't use it for two things at the same time, slow to finish copying, loaded with useless software.
Summary I have bought in the past a WD My Book Home Edition 1TB and was pleased with it. I needed more space so I decided to buy a new WD drive, and I chose the Essential 2TB model.
The design is sleek (thinner than the home edition), and has a flashy piano like finish.
It's very silent, if I leave turned on when I go to sleep I can't hear it at all while I can hear the home edition drive.
When I first bought it, it came with a virtual CD drive, that I removed, and some WD software that I found to be useless, so I uninstalled them. However, if you uninstall the software, you are not capable to use the capacity gauge?
Speed is very good, I use it with my VAIO PC with a 7200RPM drive and when copying a HD movie with a size of like 4.4 GB, I get speeds between 30 and 35 Mb/s (sometimes more).
HOWEVER, and the biggest flaw in this drive is, that when I'm copying something, off the drive or on to it, I CAN NOT use it at the same time! For example if I'm copying a movie from my pc to the drive, I can't watch a movie from the drive in the same time. Another problem is that, the drive takes a lot of time to finish the copying, meaning that when the copying process bar reaches 100%, it stays there for like a minute or so, which is really annoying?.
Some people complained that you cannot boot your computer while the drive is plugged in. I do not face this problem on my VAIO, however I've tried it with two other Dell Laptops, and both couldn't boot until I removed the USB connecting them to the WD drive.
The point is that I would recommend it to someone who would like to use for backup like me, but if you're planning to use it every day to run programs from it and use as a secondary HDD for your computer, than you better find yourself another hard drive?
Pros LED is a pretty blue?
Cons What's the purpose of an unreliable external hard drive?
Summary Drive lasted less than a year and crashed just before I went to load photos on personal system. I couldn't retrieve anything. We lost all of our family pictures because coincidentally the family system was wiped clean less than a week earlier by a tech and the My Book hard drive was the sole source left with the files.
Pros Capacious, Plug-n-play
Cons Virtual CD Bug
Summary I knew something was wrong as soon as the drive mounted: alongside the expected Western Digital Device a "Virtual CD" had also mounted. When I attempted to unmount it, it popped right back up. The virtual CD, full of documentation and bundled applications, was essentially permanently mounted as long as the drive was attached. The fix required a firmware update to the drive, a full re-boot of my macbook pro, and installation of a Virtual CD manager application from Western Digital. It was a big hassle just to get the thing to work properly.
"Great product!"on by cnote1287
Pros Reliable backup
Great value for the money
Easy to use
Easy to use software
Cons None so far!
Summary This product is a quick easy way to backup or just expand your memory. I had it going in less than a minute. Just plug it in and go. I really like the software that you can easily set up to backup automatically. I like that it is not too loud either.
