"Bulletproof, easy to configure, VERY reliable"
Pros: Small, quiet, sturdy, fast (for USB), never had one fail
Cons: None, except for wanting larger capacity, and Firewire or eSATA conections
Summary: This review pertains to both the 160GB and 500GB models.
Good God, I've been through the mill with external drives. TWO (loud) Maxtors completely failed, data unrecoverable. My Seagate is a noisy, slow drive that is a distraction even in a busy environment.
But the NetDisks - what a pleasure! Rock solid, even after several years of being powered on 24/7, and in constant use. Very quiet and unobtrusive in operation, even during intensive disk activity.
Setting it up as Fast Ethernet NDAS drive is very easy, and multiple units can be set up as RAID 0 or RAID 1. Extremely sleek and portable (but requires packing the power cord), fast for a USB 2.0 device (backward compatible with USB 1), even with a nearly full disk. It is perfect as a stand-alone drive for multiple PCs, expansion or overflow storage, back-ups, and media use.
It needs no cooling fan, as the enclosure is designed to keep the drive cool, quiet and trouble-free.
Not one person who has purchased a NetDisk on my recommendation has been disappointed. The only downsides: I am eagerly awaiting larger capacity drives to be released by Ximeta, and Firewire or even eSATA connections would be a very desirable addition.
I know that I cannot trust any valuable back-up data to Maxtor, and the Seagate sounds like it's straining, even with just occasional use. All my critical files go on the NetDisks.
I'll be first in line when they finally release the Giga model.
