"Can you settle for less?"
Pros: Best LCD TV that I have seen. Superb Color Tone, Contrast, Audio, Controls are intuitive, Looks better than any other set
Cons: Expensive, had to order from sony.com; none in stores in our area other than 46-XBR2.
Summary: Just got this today. Spent two years waiting for an LCD that was worthy. I'm not a technical TV guru, but I have looked closely at every set on the market over the past two years. I firmly believe that this is currently the largest, highest quality LCD TV with the best overall picture on the market. I looked closely at the Sharp 52" in several stores, and can't understand why Sharp's specs are better, comparing the 46" models side by side at several stores, it convinced me without doubt that Sony was a better choice, if you can afford it. The price is hard to stomach, since you can nearly have two 52" Sharp's for the price I paid for the Sony... but then again, I'll take this one Sony. I ordered direct from Sony since the local stores Circuit City and Best Buy still done carry and XBR3 models, even in the 46 and 40 inch variety. I wasn't sure how well the black would look, but I think it is a lot nicer look than the silver I've seen in the stores, even though the silver doesn't look bad. It is hard to believe that there are no high resolution pictures of most TVs on the internet. Looking at thumbnails, you can't really tell what you are getting until you see it live. Maybe Sony can put some of the profits they make on this model into improving their web site. A front and back 8 megapixel picture would be nice. lolUpdated

Ordered 11/25/06. Until Shipped 11/29/06. Unit arrived 12/05/06. Sony temporarily dropped price $1,500 on 12/28/06 (if ordered by 12/31/06). Checked with Sony concerning rebate; however, it over the 30 day price guarantee. On 1/1/07, Sony makes price reduction permanent. Moral: Better wait for first price reduction before ordering from Sony and temporary reductions turn into permanent price reductions.Updated
After more than five months with this TV, I still can't believe how good it works. I've played and played with custom settings, but I still think the default standard setting is the best. No clouds, No backlight issues. Everything remains perfect.

Have you encountered the "clouding" issue found on the smaller XBR sets manufactured in Mexico in August and September? If you do not know what I am talking about, please see the CNET review for the KDL-46XBR3 and KDL-46XBR2. I really would like to purchase this set, but I have noticed the clouding on the smaller models in the stores.
