    "Packed with features"

by larsdennert on May 3, 2007

Pros: Lots of inputs, beautiful black housing, great picture and price

    Cons: None so far

Summary: I've been looking for a while to replace my 5 year old Philips 1080i tube TV. This fills my wants entirely. 1080p, VGA input along with all the other inputs in multiples. The picture is stunning with my HD Dish box and that's compressed MP4. I have yet to bench it against the old 1080i Philips tube or our 32" 720p Sylvania but at first look, it blows them away. I shoot underwater HD video and this will fill the bill for playback! Ordered direct from HP $1899 with free shipping. Uses Philips IR codes so I didn't even have to reprogram the universal remotes. I can't give it a 10 out of 10 because I just haven't had it long enough to see if there are any gripes but so far a big thumbs up.

Two disturbing things have popped up. I hooked up my dualcore pc with an nvdia 8400 graphics card via hdmi. Stink number one the hdmi 1 port has RCA jacks to recieve analog sound and hdmi video. The RCA jacks don't seem to work. Plug the audio in somewhere else and it works. Integrated audio/video via hdmi works too.

Huge stink number two: nvidia Forceware reports the tv to have a native resolution of 1360x768 not 1920x1080. Could this be? I brought up a resolution chart I use for video on the screen at 100% and started switching display modes. Low and behold I cannot read a finer resolution at 1920x1080 than I can at 1360x768 and the 768 mode may actually look clearer!! It is extremely likely that this TV is not in fact a 1080p panel or cannot truly display 1080p signals via hdmi and I've been ripped off!

Oh stink3. At 1920x1080 the edges of the windows desktop are out of bounds and not viewable using hdmi. This is a common and obnoxious problem among HDTV panels.Imagine not being able to see your windows start menu...
This means you need to hookup via analog VGA to eliminate the overscan. That means you cannot view HDCP content via your pc unless you constantly play cable swapping games.

Stink one: hdmi 1 RCA jacks don't work for separate audio input.
Stink two: Connecting a pc via hdmi, nvidia forceware (8400 card) reports a native mode for the tv of 1360x768 not 1920x1080. I brough up a resolution chart at 100% and started switching display modes. Sure enough I couldn't see any difference in res between the two modes. In fact, 1360x768 may have been clearer. I tried to draw single pixel vertical and horizontal lines in photoshop on a 100% 1920x1080 image. No go either. They came out as 2 shaded pixels wide. Either this panel isn't 1080p or it can't display 1080 data via hdmi.

Stink three: At 1920x1080 hdmi the windows desktop gets underscaned and the edges of the desktop are not visible. IE you can't see the start menu! So either you get this or you use analog VGA and can't play HDCP or 1080p via a pc!
