"Close but . . ."
Pros: Superb color contrast
Cons: Malaria, really bad sound quality
Summary: Like several other readers, I went to purchase a Panasonic and chose the LG. Surprised myself, but you know how showrooms can be. Had the set in my home for almost 2 weeks testing for my own enjoyment. The color intensity is really amazing on the set. I had to tone it down to about 35% of normal to be able to view it. HD picture was very good at a viewing distance of about 15 feet. Closer I noticed a bit of video noise but did not concern myself with it as this was my first purchase of a plasma and was learning as I went. I then went back to CNET and unfortunately could not find a review of this TV. I did however read the previous version of this set review from last year and began to take notes along with comparing features form the LG website. After CNET's mention of the video noise and mosquito effect (malaria reference), I started looking a little more closely at the detail behind the wonderful color and found that this TV was indeed similar in nature to its previous version, from what I'm able to decipher.
Next step was to go back to my previous decision and look around at the Panasonic and the endless positive reviews and get centered again. I took a chance and ordered from one of their recommended online retailers (Beach Camera) and had a great experience. Got the new set and it is different. The picture is clearer. The definition in the detail is better clearly. The color is superb. There is no comparison in the sound. The LG had absolutely horrible sound quality. I can't believe they can get off selling something for $2k and have such terrible sound.
Anyway, I'm glad I switched and took the other set back. The LG was not bad at all and I am in complete agreement with the first guy here that I chose the LG over the Panasonic in the store side by side. But after all of this, I wonder if the set wasn't tweeked in design to display extremely vivid color and light contrast to look better than other sets around it rather than standing on its own two feet.
