"great bang for the buck"
Pros: better than average picture/color
Cons: only two "user" settings
Summary: This is really a very good plasma monitor and I'm very happy with it so far. I've only had it in my possession for four days, but if it holds up without need of repair, I will be extremely pleased with the purchase.
I bought the LG from Best Buy on sale with a discount certificate for $3870 plus tax. This is about $500 more than I could have gotten it on line, but worth the money should there be a problem and I need to return it. Returning plasmas purchased on line is a real hassle. Also, I was able to locate a local installer who hung on the wall for me for $55 and the mount can be had on ebay for $60 delivered. It was an excellent installation that I supervised myself. I should mention that it takes a least two to lift it and three is better.
It was not a great picture out of the box. The contrast, brightness, and color all needed to be lowered substantially. But, with that completed, the picture started looking great. I chose a user setting for color temperature, lowering the red a couple of clicks. The choices were "cool," "medium," and "warm," and "user." I left the tint in the neutral position.
For picture sets, there are two user settings. I found out soon that I needed separate settings for DirecTV HD (HDMI) and DVD's (component). One nice feature is that the LG "remembers" which is which and automatically switches the settings with the imputs. I wish I had another setting for VCR, but who watches much VCR stuff anymore? With the Harmony remote, switching is extremely easy. One negative: switching inputs is slow on the LG compared to my old RCA projection monitor.
I like the LG's speakers and prefer to not use the stereo for listening to ordinary TV. The anti-glare shield works fairly well, except that bright sunlight is still a problem. It handles ordinary daylight and living room lamps well. I can now watch TV with the shade up.
I can't believe you won't like the picture you get with this LG. The all black frame is one of the reasons I chose it over some of its competition. There is plenty of contrast with 7000:1. DVD's look great with my Pioneer DVD player and have a nice resolution with component video. I do suggest not sitting too close. 12 to 15 feet seems ideal and I don't think you'll notice the scan lines at this distance with your standard DVD's.
I've been looking at plasmas for a couple of years now and I've seen just about every make and model available. I like the Pioneer the best and would have bought the new Phillips 63 inch had it been available locally at a decent price. That said, I have the Panasonic TH-42PX60U hanging in the bedroom. I slightly prefer the Panasonic's on-screen menu for navigation purposes, but I like the LG's picture and optional settings much better. By the way, this plasma looks great in the middle of my 7.1 Def Techs! If you like the Panasonic, you'll love the LG.Updated
I have read other comments about this monitor that have said they notice "graininess" and other picture problems. I have now had my TV for about a month and notice none of these. I do, however, keep the setting for "sharpness" turned down. That helps to eliminate graniness and the picture is very sharp indeed. I also use the "XD" feature, but only in the manual mode. I keep the "color" and "noise" modes turned on, but leave the "contrast" mode turned off. It produced some very strange effects when I had it turned on. There has been no image retention yet. The more I have had this set, the more I have come to really appreciate it. I made the right choice.Updated
I am still extremely pleased with my purchase of this plasma. After tuning the picture with my Video Essentials DVD, I have improved the picture somewhat. I have moved the tint 7 clicks to the right toward green. I have upped the color from where I had it and lowered the contrast.
DVD's look great with component video, but not as good as good as HDTV. The color is outstanding on HDTV and, at least to my eyes, as good or better than any I've seen on any set and that includes the greens.
I will be trying out an HD DVD player with an HDMI cable soon. I'll let you know how it looks.Updated
I have had this TV for a year now. If possible, I like this TV even more after a year than I did when I bought it. It still has terrific color balance and has not let me down once. It gives a great picture with std. definition, with HD, with upconverted DVD's, and HD DVD's. You can get this set for as low as $2500. If you're looking for a great picture, stop looking at lcd and 1080p. This one is simply great!

Hi William. It's been since April when you last provided an update on your plasma LG 60PC1D. How's it holding up today? I've been looking at one recently, and am curious if it experiences "burn in" that the older plasmas were troubled with. Otherwise, are there any other problems you've had with it, and if so, what's your experience with repair response?
I appreciate reading your technical knowledge on your initial reviews/opinion on CNET.
Thanks in advance for your response.
Rosario
