"Avoid This Television"
Pros: Nice Picture (at times)
Cons: Terrible quality control, short warranty period
Summary: This television is the worst piece of junk I have ever owned. I purchased the Magnavox 32MF337B LCD TV from Home Depot in June 2007 for $699.00. Admittedly, this was a spur of the moment buy as the TV was ?on sale? and the display model had a very good picture. There were no problems with set up, connections or any other technical issues. I would rate the picture quality for both standard and HD cable very good.
This was to be a second set for the den so it had very few hours of use on it. By September 2007 the trouble started. The screen would suddenly turn terribly distorted and a loud buzzing sound would blast from the speakers. The set would then lock up and not turn back on until it had been unplugged for several minutes. At first I thought it might be a problem with the cable box or the broadcast itself. That proved to be false. The behavior became more and more frequent until the set finally locked up and refused to turn at all.
Now the fun part began. I checked the Magnavox web site and owners? manual and discovered that this TV set has only a 90 DAY WARRANTY for full parts and labor!! Of course, the warranty period had just expired as the troubles began. I believe the short warranty period is a true reflection of the quality of the Magnavox (actually Philips) product. SO I had to take the set to a local Magnavox authorized repair facility and pay $175 to get it fixed. They didn?t get it right the first time so I had to take it back a second time for them to complete the job.
It is now early December 2007 and the set is going bad again. Instead of a full screen I get about a 2? black stripe at the top and bottom of the screen, which then flips back and forth between a full screen picture and the 2 black stripe views. So it looks like this piece of junk is headed back to the shop again to get this new problem fixed. I have now doubt that it will cost me another $175.00 service fee to fix it.
So after six months of ownership I have had to get this set repaired three times and paid an extra $350 in repair charges. The fact that this thing is such a piece of junk is bad enough, but I bought it with Home Depots ?no interest/no payments for 12 months? plan. So here I have no paid 50% of the original value of the purchase in repairs, but have yet to pay for the TV itself. If it weren?t for that fact I think the thing would be in the trash.
So in my opinion AVOID THIS TV AND ANY SIMILAR MAGNAVOX/PHILIPS PRODUCTS LIKE THE PLAGUE! Poor quality and a short warranty make for one very unhappy owner. Stay with a quality brand and pay a few dollars more, it?s worth it.
