"Great price but buy it could be a gamble."

by Streiff on March 24, 2008

Pros: Big TV for small price, wonderful TV while it's working.

Cons: Every day you cross your fingers something new doesn't go wrong.

Summary: I bought this TV at a black Friday sale in November of 2006. After purchasing it, I found many negative reviews online from others who had purchased this same TV. A few said their TV came DOA, many others started having things go out on it with in months of using it. I was lucky, my only problem with it (at first) was that about 50% of the time, when I would turn the TV on, I would only get sound and no picture. This was remedied by turning the TV off and then turning it back on again and the picture would show up.

We put this TV in our den/movie room and it didn't see much use for the first year. It was probably turned on only about 6 hours a month, if that. The in November of 2007, we started remodeling our den and moved the TV to our living room. By December of 2007, the buttons on the TV itself (volume and channel) would no longer work. You can press them and nothing happens. But we could still use the TV fine because we could still use the remote control. Then in February of 2008 the remote stopped working. This was when I discovered, while trying to locate a new remote, that Olevia TV's do not support universal remotes.

So now we can not change the aspect view on the TV (i.e. can not switch between wide screen and regular) and we can not change the volume on our TV at all. We had to attach an entirely different speaker system with it's own console so we could turn the volume up and down. We also would not be able to change the channels at all, except that we have a cable box hooked up to it from the cable company.

Thank God the power button still works! The day that goes out, we will have a 42 inch LCD paper weight.

I really hopped the best for our TV, and for the $1000 we paid, it should have lasted longer then the few hours a month it was used in our den and the 3 months in our living room.
