"Can't be beat!" on by Mat912
Pros: Great LCD TV - No Issues - LOW PRICE
Cons: You don't get to spend a ton of money on it which all other brands want you too.
Summary: Here's the deal. If the name on your TV is more important than the TV then don't buy this. If you want a great LCD TV for a great price then buy this.
I got this with a $150 rebate to bring it in around $600. This TV from any big name would of cost 4X that. I have it hooked up to DirecTv and it is great.
The reason you won't see high ratings from CNET and others is because Syntax doesn't pay CNET for advertising like the other big boys.
Like it or not that's the truth. -
"Better then expecting" on by dtow
Pros: Bright, Clear Image
Cons: None noted so far
Summary: I recieved mine yesteday, setup was a breeze. I've been using a Sony PCG-GRT170 laptop with a 16.1 SXGA 1400x1050 TFT display. I have a Sony 32"tube tv next to it conected to Dishnetworks DVR. When I hooked up the laptop using the only available extra output a VGA line and turned it on I was so happy with the brighter, clearer picture. I also hooked up the DVR to S-Video line 1 to discover a much brighter, more vivid picture of the tv. I am waiting on a new system I ordered from Alienware that will have a DVI output and need to talk to Dish Networks about a HDTV reciever yet. Gaming from my PC are fantastic. I loved the "auto" setting on the remote for the Olivia, it will resize my imput to fill the monitor. I have not yet fine tuned anything but really don't see a need to at this point. Colors are true, contrast great. Very happy with this purchase. I ordered it from Tiger Direct and it took two days to be delivered
I wish I had seen this before, when there was a $150 rebate. I paid $789.00 with $44.01 shipping, (ground). One of the neat features is all the inputs, it covers everything I can think of. Buy it! -
"Great Value, Not a "Magnetbox"" on by backfrog
Pros: Price, Good picture, Many Inputs, Did I Mention Price?
Cons: Side speakers make it wide, no swivel action, remote, on-screen interface
Summary: I got this for $520 AR from radioshack.com. I wasn't sure about Syntax monitors but it turned out to be a decent LCD monitor at a bargain price. The picture is very good. The settings obviously needed tweaking like with all monitors but once you do, the picture is great. It has brightness modes for it being used in a dark room or a well lit room.
A downside was that it had speakers on the side instead of the bottom that made the TV really wide. I didn't think about this when I bought this and it just fits in the spot I wanted to put this in. The speakers are not that good either, so I wish that it had a option to take them off so I could just use a receiver and save space. Another gripe with the sound was that when I turned the TV on for the first time, the volume started off at 50 (half way to the max) and it blew out my ears. The stand also doesn't swivel or tilt. I guess this is the area they cut costs on. It wasn't a big problem to me since I will be mounted it on the wall. The interface was a little frustrating to navigate around. If you went to change a setting, you couldn't simply go back to the main menu, you had to click menu again, not a big deal. The remote is very cheaper and very poorly layed out. Buttons fell odd and the remote sometimes doesn't work at all.
Some of what I disliked about the Syntax are just preferences so they're not a big deal. Especially since it is so much cheaper than its competition and since it does the most important thing well, the picture quality. -
"Wonderful for smaller bedroom, esp. at price" on by mweflen
Pros: Form factor, brightness, clarity, sub$700 price tag
Cons: Lackluster black level, a few wonky settings
Summary: I purchased this television as a spare DVD/HD set which doubles as a PC monitor. It performs very ably all of these functions.
The color decoder is surprisingly accurate out of the box at "Middle." The unit calibrates reasonably well with DVE, though I have found that after switching inputs, sometimes the brightness setting is 'off' upon returning to say, the DVD input. A quick trip to the user menu to bump it one tick up or down 'restores' it to the proper brightness for the setting.
The black level is typical of an LCD panel - not as good as some of Sony's newer Wega sets, but better than a normal PC monitor, and more than usable for movies. The viewing angles (which are not incredibly forgiving as far as PQ goes) play a role in this, also.
For the price, I am stunned that this unit performs as well as it does. I am quite happy with my purchase from that standpoint. Less discriminating viewers who make this (or a larger Syntax unit) their first HDTV will likely be blown away. -
"Terrific and Affordable" on by RJ0958
Pros: Great Picture Great Price
Cons: None at moment
Summary: After researching many webistes and lots of long hours looking at side by side performance at Best Buy,Tiger Direct and other electronic gear providers, I decided on the Syntex because of its price and picture. It performs as well as many of the more expensive televisions I've looked at and I would highly recommend it for those currently in the market for a television that doesn't break the bank.
