"STILL no 1080p over component or VGA!!"
Pros: Deep blacks and vibrant colors
Cons: no 1080p component input
Summary: Just got off the phone with Panasonic tech support....I can't believe they skimp on the input connections with a TV that is otherwise so perfect! I was just about to order one before I got this info.
VGA input resolution restricted to 1366x768 (or something similar, forgot the exact number, but it's not 1920x1080!!)

This review is nonsense. Are you still using a VCR, too? Are you still using a rotary phone? Wake up and smell the 21st century, mister backwards. Everybody uses HDMI now, and this TV had 4 HDMI ports! Complaining about this awesome TV not being able to accept 1080p through componant is like complaining that your iPhone won't accept a beeper page. I just bought the 50 inch Viera and it is the best TV I have ever bought! It took me 2 weeks to even find one because they are sold out everywhere. To anyone out there interested in getting this TV, my advice to you is 100% without a doubt make the purchase!!!

Most people really don't care about 1080p over component because most people buying a $2100+ tv in 2009 have moved well beyond legacy game systems & electronics to those that utilize HDMI. That Panasonic ( a company with customer service that puts ALL others to shame) chooses not to waste resources is fine with me.

I agree with the original poster. I was planning on buying this tv, but not being able to run 1080p over component is pretty sad. (i own a first generation 360) While you can argue there aren't that many uses for 1080p on component, since we are paying alot of money for these tvs, it would be nice to see such a great 1080p set have 1080p inputs other then hdmi. just a thought

VGA output would have been another option for 1080p output from the 360 (already solved by $100 HDMI converter cable previously mentioned).
It just strikes me as ridiculous that they don't allow 1080p on the existing VGA/component like every decent new TV I've seen. Is this some sort of huge cost savings for them?
What also annoyed me was the Panasonic tech support guy who was trying to tell me that my Sharp LC-42D64U LCD was essentially "lying" to me when it said it was accepting 1080p over component, when it was obvious that he was the one lying (or at best, he didn't know what he was talking about). -
Sorry to be callous, but: why should you even care to run a source through VGA?Just get a peripheral that has HDMI out... ...like 99% of every relevant player/game system.

I went ahead and bought the TV because I found an Xbox 360 HDMI adapter cable on-line that will allow 1080p output from 1st-gen 360s for $100.
The only problem I have now is flickering in white or light screens/backgrounds with my PC over HDMI. I'd figured that 60 Hz via plasma wouldn't have the same flicker as 60 Hz via CRT, but it's not a whole lot better. Certainly far worse the the complete absense of flicker with my previous monitor/TV (a Sharp 42D64U LCD). -
davin8r27 is correct.
Panasonic have never allowed 1080p over VGA or Component on their plasmas even though both connections can display that resolution fine with good quality cables (not skinny cheap ones) and not longer than 5 meters.
1080p over Component and VGA looks nearly as good as 1080p over HDMI. I've seen it. 1080p over Component looked just a smidgen softer and 1080p over VGA looked like the colors were slightly over saturated which still looked great.
This is one of the reasons why I'm buying a Samsung plasma because I don't want to change my 1st Gen Xbox360 or upgrade my graphics card on my PC. -
They don't allow 180p over the VGA connection because VGA isn't design to pass that much information. Rather than allow it and have a poor picture come out they are limiting it to improve the user experience. Personally I would only ever us DVI or HDMI to pass a full 1080p signal.

To the 2 jerks who don't know what they're talking about:
1. I *do* own this TV.
2. Many if not most modern HDTVs *do* accept 1080p over component (do your home work before running your mouth)
3. XBox 360 1st generation does not have HDMI output and therefore requires component or VGA to output 1080p. My computer graphics card is a Geforce GTX 295 (about as far from "stone age" as it gets).
3. Bite me -
Buy the TV...then review it. Component video has NEVER done 1080p. Use HDMI or deal with 1080i, most games don't come in 1080p anyhow and are downscaled to 720p or 1080i, so why do you even care? Your review is a complete waste of space.

Even though only one of three people found this helpful at the time of my reply, I want to thank you for posting that info. That is the type of thing that I'd probably find out the hard way a year after owning a set (hook up the pc to play a video game and find out the resolution is limited).
I hope Panasonic changes this. -
Why would you review a TV when you don't own it? Stop the irresponsible reviews. Also, why would you use component and not HDMI? VGA is old technology. Get a graphic card from this century with HDMI or DVI onboard and you wouldn't have to waste people's time with a stupid review. Not buying a TV for the reason's you list is moronic.
