    "CAVEAT EMPTOR! NOT REALLY HD!"

by shrippyshram on November 8, 2005

    Pros: Sharp, bright, clean image

    Cons: Not fully HD resolution!

Summary: BUYER BEWARE! I got this set home before I realized my error--and why it was so affordable! The maximum resolution on this set is 1024x768! The resolution of 720p video is 1280x720! Most "720p" sets will have a max or full resoltion of 1336x768.

This set will only display 960 of the 1280 HORIZONTAL pixels (side to side) in a 720p signal. You are loosing out on 25 percent of the horizontal picture!

If all that math is too confusing, let me put it this way. Whereas folks with a real 720p set will see all of the action that is being broadcast, folks with THIS set will miss out on one-fourth of it. You'll get the whole VERTICAL (top to bottom) picture, but not the whole horizontal one.

If you want REAL 720p, DO NOT BUY THIS SET! This kind of false advertising (saying it "accepts a 720p signal," rather than it "displays a 720p signal,") should be illegal.

I think this reviewer might just be having some fun, but just in case others are not aware - A TV with a resolution that does not exactly match true HD resolution does not cut off part of the picture. It "resamples" the picture to fit the resolution of the TV.

Although more pixels generally means more detail - contrast ratio, brightness, and viewing angle are also important considerations. Plasma displays generally do these things better than other flat panel technologies. Don't judge the quality of this set purely on the number of pixels it has.

If you want true HD resolution (1280 X 720), you'll have to go to a 50" plasma. 42" inchers are typically 1024 x 768 native resolution. By the way, this set is 1024 x 720 (not 768). Because it's more densely pixelated, I think it has a better picture than most of the 42" plasmas out there, and does a fine job resolving HD content.
