"Great new TV; great new price"
Pros: Superb picture
Cons: Reports of sets with neon green overcast
Summary: I have been waiting to see this TV. Panasonic has made quite a price drop, with the PX50U series, and made changes to the display itself to be able to display billions of colors. I observed the 37" model closely at our Best Buy; it had just came in, for $2999. I have also seen the 42" model in another store. I don't see what I consider good reputable online stores carrying it yet; it is May 2005. Oh sure there are some stores with great prices; but have you checked them out at resellerratings.com?
The picture quality is superb. They had Discovery HD on. They had a Sharp LCD of the same size next to it. When I moved off to one side about 50 degrees, the LCD brightness faded quite a bit whereas the Panasonic remained as bright and colors as vivid as watching straight-on. The top did not seem unusually hot. The stand, quite like a large duck's foot, was not that attractive but who cares, I guess.
While watching 4:3 programs on a widescreen set, picture size drops by a factor of 0.81. Most off-air digital broadcasts are in 4:3 format, except for HD. So buyers need to think what size 4:3 TV they are accustomed to and plan accordingly. It takes a 42" widescreen to give about a 32" 4:3 picture. Sure you can expand a picture to fill a widescreen but that's just not the same.
