"Best Plasma, top quality picture, even with pioneer"

by swedrows on December 27, 2006

Pros: Outstanding HD picture quality, great integrated speakers

Cons: PIP feature is only available through a few of the inputs

Summary: First off, please ignore the review posted by ziegenfuss, since his review is for the 50px60u, which is last years model..apparently some people have a hard time reading and placing their comments under the correct tv they actually have.

I purchased this tv on 12-19-06 and have been absolutely thrilled with it from the start. I originally had a Philips 50" plasma (50pf7220a) and was not happy with it, so it went back to Costco and I went to BestBuy to purcahse the new Panasonic 50px600u. The picture quality on this tv is absolutely amazing. Seeing it at the store is nothing compared to when you actually get the set home, and adjust the picture settings to their proper values (quick search online will give you these values).

    Picture:
I had compared this set to a Pioneer 5070, which is the top-rated plasma, and the picture of this Panasonic held it's own. There is absolutely no distinguishable difference in the picture quality of these two plasma's, especially since you are supposed to have a viewing distance of 10-12 feet for a 50" tv. Most people seem to look at picture quality from 2-3 feet away when they are at the stores, and this just makes everyone question every tv they see. The picture is crisp, colors are great and accurate, and the contrast helps this tv achieve great detail in dark scenes. Most people have heard that Panasonics have the best black levels of all plasmas, and I completely agree with it. Viewing high definition signals on this tv will make your jaw drop if you are a first-time HD viewer, or even if you have had a high-definition tv and are upgrading. My wife and I thought that the HD picture quality of our previous plasma was very good, but once we brought this tv home and turned it on, we were both very surprised and how much better the HD signals looked on this tv. The added detail and the levels of gradation of colors helps the images look deeper (more 3-dimensional). Alot of HD tv's are capable of showing a nice HD picture, but this Panasonic really makes you appreciate the beauty of high definition.

    Sound:
The sound on this tv will impress anyone that has had to put up with mediocre sound from previous tv's. The integrated speakers are now at 30watts, and also include a subwoofer which adds a good amoutn of bass that will satisafy the average consumer who wants to enjoy a home theater experience, but can't afford to shell out another $500-$2000 for a home theater speaker system.

    Appearance:
The exterior of this tv is very attractive. Many people have complained that the tv should be all black, but the design of the exterior, along with the bright silver and black bevel make this tv stand out in a crowd of plain black plasma's lined up on a wall at any electronics store. The feel of the tv is incredibly sturdy, and especially the tv stand if you opt not to hang the tv on a wall. The tv stand itself weighs about 35 pounds and there is absolutely NO risk of the tv tilting forward or backwards when mounted on the stand.

    Features:
This tv has a great set of features, such as PIP, lots of connections including 2 HDMI ports and a PC input (for those wanting to hook up a computer or HTPC or gaming console). It also has a SD card slot so you can take pictures with your digital camera, pull the memory card out and pop it into the tv and instantly have a slideshow going. For those of us that use digital cameras fairly often, it is a great little feature to have included.

    Cons:
The only bad thing that I can think of or comment on is that the PIP feature does not work with all the inputs, only certain ones. It unfortunately does not work with devices connected through the HDMI ports, or through the PC input which is a shame since HDMI is the new connection standard, so it would have been nice to have PIP with two HDMI connected devices. But there is always the chance that Panasonic is going to issue a firmware upgrade that will enable PIP to work with these inputs. Other than that, there is nothing else that would make anybody question purchasing this tv.

    Conclusion:
Overall, this is by far the best plasma tv you can get for the price. You can alwasy find this tv for less than the Pioneer models, and it puts out just as good a picture of any plasma I have seen. Panasonic did a great job on this updated model and I am now a loyal Panasonic consumer. Even with the PIP issue I wrote about above, I still give this tv a perfect 10 rating!
