"This unit may be troubled..."
Pros: Great picture when new
Cons: Poor repair record
Summary: I bought one of these from Costco In August 2006, and within a couple of months, it developed a problem where the menu would pop up unexpectedly. A Philips service contractor came to look at it 3 times, with no avail, so I returned it to Costco in December 2006 and replaced it with another. After six months, this TV has developed a bluish pixel distortion on the left side of the screen after being on for about 2 hours. The tech came and looked at it, then another came a week later and replaced the Y-Sus board. No change in the picture. Next, they came last week and took the TV to their shop. It has been there for one week now. They intend to replace the Y-Sus again, and a Y-Drive, but we'll see what happens... Stay tuned for updates.Updated
I went and picked up the television at the shop on 8/10/2007 and brought it home (after 11 days!). The picture is once again beautiful. Even though the work was done under warranty, I asked for a repair cost breakdown and here is what I got:
Y-Buffer $190
Logic Board $195
Y-Sus Board $245 (replaced twice)
Labor $250
In sum, the total repair cost to date was $1,125 on a TV that cost $1,199 new, and this excludes labor cost for three technicians' trips to my house.
I still need to approach Philips about extending the warranty on parts and labor for a year on all these new parts, which I think would be the fair thing to do. I'll post the results here.
