"end of an era"
Pros: All about the black baby
Cons: too bad this is the end of the line. you've got only 1% of the population ponying up the big bucks for these things. pioneer out of the plasma business now.
Summary: if you can afford it, buy the 60", a PS3, and a tricked out home theatre system. AWESOME.

Dear David Katzmaier: Love your work but...HOW COME YOU UPDATE SOME TV REVIEWS BY LOWERING THEM BUT NOT THE Pioneer Elite Kuro PRO-111FD ?? This unfair practice shows bias against any TV that is not the Pioneer Elite Kuro PRO-111FD. Hugs & Kisses - Conan

They are not out of buisness, This year is the last year that is 100% pioneer parts, Next year panasonic will make the glass to pioneer standard and specs. so panel/glass is the only thing being out sourced
-
From what I have heard and Read, Pioneer will still be designing all thier Plasma displays. They just outsourcing the pdp module (glass panel) to matahitsui to be built to pioneer specifications. This means Panasonic (matahitsui) will only be building one part one the TV TO PIONEER SPECIFICATION. The rest of the Television (hardware, driving technology, etc) will be assembled and tested at Pioneer.
Panasonic is a quality leader in building the PDP module. So I believe this will only make Pioneer plasma's better.
Panasonic and Pioneer Plasma's will still be very different.
Example: Sony and Samsung LCD's are built together in the same factory. Look how different they are.
Manufacturing outsourcing is a normal thing in the electronics industry.
SO BY NO MEANS IS THIS THE "END OF AN ERA".
AFRO2358, Do some reading and learn a little before posting non-sense. -
let me clarify, pioneer will still SELL plasmas, they just won't fully DESIGN or MAKE them themselves. they are outsourcing a good portion of the key technology. so, there will be less to differentiate them from the other plasma guys.

reply to Afro2358 - do a 'lil research b4 you make such strong (incorrect) statements (below).
Pioneer VP talks about their position on QUALITY plasma production and its future:

Panasonic's VP also discusses the flat panel - plasma future:

is it safe for gaming?-----------> YES, the current generations of plasma's are suitable for gaming, but the LCD whinners will tell ya otherwise. -
Pioneer will be going out of the plasma business. Pioneer is only making and selling 50's & 60 inches, which is way to big for the Mass Consumers out there. Plus, Pioneer has already teamed up with Sharp and as i type this, Pioneer is already selling their 32, 37, and 46 inches LCD's in Europe in which it will be here in America in 2009. So, some where down the line, Plasma's for Pioneer will be dead via way of the 8 track. And, the way the Economy is headed, it will be sooner rather than later.

actually, pioneer is far from out of the plasma buisness.
They are just outsourcing the glass for their PDP's to panasonics plant.
this does not mean Pioneer will use the same PDP module that the Panasonics uses.
It just means that Matshitsu will be building the Pioneer glass to pioneer specifications. -
