"The 5010 and the entire Kuro line offer the best picture quality of any HDTV, regardless of type"
Pros: Extremely good blacks, brilliant color saturation, crystal-clear HD quality, fantastic SD processing
Cons: None except the price...
Summary: If you want the best, but don't have any use for the advanced picture tweaking functions of the Pioneer Elite line, then this TV is for you. This TV is quite expensive but the years of enjoyment you will get out of the upgrade on picture quality will make this a terrific purchase.
Compare the life-like colors of this TV to many plasmas and any LCD and you will immediately notice how the colors of the other set look washed out, dull, and gray in comparison. The PDP-5010 looks like you are peering through a glass window into another world, unlike other displays where you feel like you are watching on a plastic computer screen.
Some impressions from my set up:
*Black-levels are exactly what they are hyped up to be. This makes every color extremely rich, and the contrast between dark and bright scenes is remarkable. The black bars in movies are like an infinite abyss of darkness
*4 HDMI inputs are more than enough for any set-up I can think of
*The styling of the TV really fits with our room. The TV has a completely black, thin glossy frame that unlike other TVs doesn't look like its trying too hard.
*BLU-RAY and HD-DVD look fantastic, cannot tell a difference in PQ between the two however
*We use this TV for a fair amount of gaming, and I once played a PS3 game for four hours and did not notice one hint of image retention. Many have said these Kuros seem to be completely immune to it. If you do see it when you shut the set off, simply don't worry because it will go away in a second once the pixels are fired up again.
*This TV still looks stunning in a bright room, which is how we have it for much of the day, but turning down the lights at least to a dim setting really allows it to shine. In a dark room it is generally recommended to turn down the brightness a bit to avoid any eye strain, which allows for an extremely natural picture as well.
*The flesh-tones on this TV look perfect and flesh is highly detailed, and colors are accurate to their real-life counterparts
*The internal processor seems to clean up standard-def TV better than any set I have seen. Avoiding SD is always the best option however...
Pioneer has made a fantastic set, and I feel compelled to let others know of my experience in order to help them with their research. If this TV is on your short-list, do not hesitate to purchase it.
