"already out of date, just like every other pioneer"
Pros: good color
Cons: read the following paragraph if you wanna know cons
Summary: it has a primitive resolution already out of date, 1365x768, matches up with an hdtv feed but when the high def dvds come around, this tv is flat out junk. it will compress color, clarity, everything, most low end computer monitors you find as costco for crying outloud have a higher resolution. pioneer has nothing on sony and probably never will, especially since sony will have bigger lcds going all the way up to 60 inches starting february of 2007, see you later plasma. go check out sonys xbr2 40", 46", and 52" all with 1080p, 3! hdmi's that support true 1080/24p 1.3 hdmi and have more accurate color than pioneers over luminous color destroying tvs, sony nailed it down with their tvs. and if your complaing about price with the sony, look at how much better of a tv it is, THATS WHY

You or your gay lover must have stock in Sony, as you are obviously in the minority here. Sony makes a great TV I just have a hard time paying 20-30% mark up to have the Sony decal on the front...

I really find it funny that someone would waste their time and post a sony commercial on a Pioneer review page. I also find it funny that you said 720p resolution is dead now that 1080p is out. Well buddy you obviously dont know a thing about the importance of size and viewing distances when making the purchase of a television. Unless you plan on buying a television 60 inches or larger, you will not be able to tell a difference. I also find it funny how you say the color of the HD movies will be compressed and look off when used on a 720p panel, when the truth is that all colors are inacurate on your precious sony LCDs in comparison to the Pio plasma. I will admit the greens are oversaturated on the Pioneer, but thats it. Also dont get me started on the weak contrast ratio, and lackluster blacks of your precious sony LCDs. Take a look at this thread http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=801893&page=1&pp=30&highlight=piomaniac
if you want to really see why plasma is king and how beautiful it will display 1080p HD movies. Also please quit spreading misinformation, and try to get yourself a life. -
This guy must be a diehard Sony biased moron. Specs don't mean anything. I have a 3 megapixel Nikon digital camera and a 5 megapixel Vivitar. The Nikon takes WAY better pics. No LCD ANYWHERE can come close to the picture quality of this Pioneer plasma. I don't care if it is 9045p, they still need to get faster processors and refresh rates to not have that artifacting and jutter and blurring. Jagged edges are a problem with lcd's. Not to mention the shadow detailing. If you are looking into lcd's, try the Toshiba Regza's. You can't even read text on them Sony's. Very blurry. Just go to any store and compare the most expensive lcd screen out there, and make your own decision. Don't listen to this fool.

SONY was great in the 80's & 90's, I had all their TV's. They have rested on their dominance and reputation and have been passed by several of the elite manufacturers.
The Pioneer at 720p looks better than the Sony's at 1080p, how do you explain that? -
So 1080p really only matters if you are sitting within 6 feet of the screen. I have a living room MUCH bigger than that. Besides, you can only clean up film to DVD transfers so much and frankly, I don't like seeing all the film improprieties on my old movie DVD's from the film transfer in all their 1080p glory. 480p for DVD's is fine for me right now. Besides I am waiting for the HD winner before I stress about that. Just give me Deadwood and Sopranos in 5.1 and I'll be happy.

Theres always one in the crowd!! My biggest problem I have with the tv is whether to have popcorn or chips and dip as not to get the remote all dirty. Theres nothing better than watching a movie on a sweet surround sound system (polk and Yamaha)on the tv your beautiful wife wanted just as bad as you!!!! Go back to your Friday night league of Dungeons and Dragons DUDE!!!!

I'm in pre-purchase research mode. A long time Trinitron fan, my first stop was Sony's 46" 1080p LCD's (including the new 46V2500). I was disappointed to find their LCD's simply can't compare in picture quality with the 5070 or the 9UK (my two top choices); I actually did side-by-side comparisons. I'm going with the Sony 26S2010 for my second room, but won't touch their big screens. Sony simply got beat at plasma.

Hey, I am a sony TV fan also, but I am not going to post ratings on other tv's just to promote them, that is why, even though I spent a lot of time looking at hdtv's and comparing them in the store, I don't rate them why ? because conditions change from the store to home, you have to somehow adjust them to your lighting etc., and I would never give a rating of anykind just because I subjectively think that a brand is better than another.

one of the worst reviews on CNET ever. please keep your obvious fanboyism of Sony to yourself.

I own it and this Pioneer completely blows all those Sony 1080p LCD XBR2 and XBR3 TVs away. Colors, black, grey are simply better and more vibriant on this Pioneer Plasma. This TV is second to none, except to Pioneer's other higher-end 1080p plasma. At 6-7 feet, you will not see any difference between a 720p and a 1080p TV especially when watching movies where motion are non-stop.

To say that this TV is out of date is an oxymoron. This is the latest model of a Pioneer line that's been at the top of the plasma consumer industry along with Panasonic. I won't comment on the Sony XBR2's 'cause I'm not an expert and I don't own one either. But even if I'd own one, I still wouldn't comment on it 'cause this is a review for the Pioneer PDP5070. Please, do us all a favor and keep your foolish comments & reviews to yourself.

This guy is just wrong. Sound and Vision just reviewed the new 1080p Pioneer 50" plasma @ $8500 street and called it the best picture yet, BUT they also said that at over 6' viewing distance the difference vs. a 768 set was readilly noticable. Who watches at 6 feet? Or 7? Or 8? Or even 9?

Blacks are far superior in this pioneer then the xbr2. Also, 1080p is not what it is being built up to. I have seen a blu-ray disc played on a 5070 and a xbr2 and the pioneer looked slightly better then the sony. 1080p is only remotely noticeable if you are less then 5 feet away from it. The only sourse of 1080p out right now is blu-ray and eventually HD-DVD. All HD broadcasts are in 1080i/720p and they will stay that way for many many years. Broadcasts may never go 1080p. Trust me the PDP-5070/1 is the best plasma on the market. You also don't have to worry about losing picture quality as you change viewing angles either like you do with the xbr2. Do not listen to this guys post. Do research to see which one will fit you better. I picked the 5071 over the xbr2. I wont go around bashing the xbr2 like this guy. The xbr2 is a great TV, I just like the 5070 better.
