    "Best 50" Plasma made"

by gadgetlvr on November 29, 2005

Pros: Picture, Features, Black levels, Quality

Cons: Price and can only buy from brick and mortar stores

Summary: I'm amazed that CNET hasn't reveiwed this product yet. This is the best 50" plasma made, and it's 43" brother the 930 is the best 43" made. It is the standard that all others are judged. If you go to any videophile store this is the one they'll show you. In New Jersey and New York, Harvey Electronics and many of the smaller mom & pop specialty stores carry this unit. Even the electronics stores that have some high end product will carry it as their standard- Sixth Avenue Electronics and Electronics Expo in New Jersey and New York.

High end stores want to show off their DVD players, high definition content, and the audio product that goes along with it. This unit will be front and center in their show rooms. Fujitsu is another terrific maker of the better plasmas, these are even more money and most feel the Pioneer Elite series- which the 1130 and 930 are part of, represent the consumer sets because of all the features.

I won't get into all the features here because you can easily go the page that contains them, but I'll highlight a few:

TV Guide- so you don't need a cable box to know what's on- the cable card from your cable provider will allow for high definition content.

Memory card slot so you can plug your memory card right in the tv wihtout having to deal with all the cables.

There was some criticism of the previous generation plasma that the blacks weren't as black as they should be- the one feature that many felt Panasonic was the market leader. Well, Pioneer corrected this short coming. It's blacks are second to none.

Media Box- this nifty unit has an slot for a cable card and all cable connections. There's only one wire from the tv to this unit which makes for a much easier and aesthetically pleasing look. I have my box behind the wall in a separate room. It gives the tv a "floating" look.

Beautiful- there isn't a prettier plasma made. The black cabinet is a wonderful contrast to anything that's on display.

ISF calibration is available. You can hire a technician to come in and calibrate the colors of your set for daytime viewing and night time viewing. The ISF tecnician can go inside the tv and fine tune each color setting to the exact specifications to give you the best possible picture.

You can only buy this plasma from a brick and mortar location. Pioneer doesn't allow for sale on the internet.

The sister unit of this set is the 5060. BB sells this model as the 5061. It's less money and can be purchased through internet dealers. Most of the same features as the 1130- ISF calibration isn't possible. Please go to the Pioneer website and get yourself a list of authorized online dealers. Your warranty is void is you buy from a non-authorized internet dealer.

Pansonic makes an excellent product, and has better value plasmas. If you want the best go for this tv.

They still haven't reviewed this plasma to beat all plasmas. I think they have their hands in Panasonic's pockets. Get with it and review the absolute hands down best plasma on the market.

    This thing is awesome.
Stylish, it's great having the external receiver if you want to do a wall mount, only two wires to run to the display.
Yes it costs more than most but stand 12 feet back and compare it to whatever you want, now stand 2 feet back. When others start ?pixelating? and become boxy, this thing just shines.
Watch out buying online (I bought mine locally at a store for $6200). Pioneer warns on it web site, it only deals with 20 online companies, if you don't deal with one of them no warranty!

None of the CNET certified vensors are on Pioneers list.

I have only had this TV a few days but have been staring at HDTVs in stores now for well over two months.

At the start, the debate was back and forth the Panasonic PX50U/500U plasmas and the Sony SXRD projection set but my eyes kept getting drawn to the Pioneer 5060/5061 whenever I was at a store that carried them. The image quality (colors are outstanding, black levels more than tolerable) really "popped" compared to these and any other sets in the same stores, and the overall look of the TV cabinet/stand/speakers was the best of any I have seen.

Of course once the decision was made to step up to the Pioneer 5060 price point, it was a short jump further to the Elite 1130, which is what I eventually bought. And thus far, could not be happier with it. And the fact the Elite models are only available in brick and mortar stores does not keep you from cutting a great deal face-to-face.

As for setting it up, the separate connection box makes this a breeze. All your cable can remain in your TV stand or component rack where they belong and only two cables (one connection, one power) need to go to the screen itself. Admittedly at first, I thought this was odd, upon further review, it is brilliant. The time from when the set was delivered to first use was only about 60-75 minutes which included the time to attach the speakers (which sound awesome by the way). Of course to hit those times for setup you have to have all your other components/cables ready to go which I did from my old TV making it a pretty easy swap-out.

Note the plasma screen itself, though lighter than most, is still a bit much to manage and you will need help even if just setting it up on a stand (like I did). My wife was a more than capable second set of hands for this. As for wall mounting, I can't speak to that since I did not go through that process.

Bottom line: If you have the money, and want absolutely no buyer's remorse, buy this set and turn it on! It also helps if you have a weekend of nothing but football in high-def to watch to help break things in and to get you over whatever remorse may creep in to your mind at the price tag.

The review of the Pioneer Elite 50" plasma TV was outstanding.

I've had my Pro-1130HD for about two months and have to say that there is nothing to complain about. Excellent picture! The previous responder pretty well laid out what it will do and how it looks. I will probably not bother with the calibration as I can't see anything I want to correct. You should know that I worked 40years as a TV Director and have some idea of what to look for, only wish we had this HD stuff before I retired. I have an antenna connected (needs upgrading for some stations) and the OTA picture is even better than the cable feed. My comparison was MNF. Not many dealers carry the Elite models but please have them install, you don't want any accidents at this price level. Enjoy, well worth it.
