You may not have heard of Sampo, but this Taiwanese manufacturer has been making consumer electronics in Asia for years. Its PME-42V3 42-inch plasma panel is certainly not at the cutting edge of plasma technology, but for a reasonable price, it offers useful features and every possible input connector you can think of. It can display everything from DVDs to HDTV to your PC. If your interior decorating demands a thin TV but the price tags of higher-resolution plasmas take too big a bite out of your wallet, check out this number.

A few pixels short
The native resolution of the PME-42V3 is just 852x480 pixels. While this is pretty common for low-end plasma panels, it falls short of true high definition. Inside, a video scalar converts all your input signals such as TV, DVD, or HDTV to display properly at the screen's resolution. However, we saw lots of de-interlacing artifacts watching TV and movies, which indicates that the PME-42V3's scalar is not so hot. Even HDTV material showed artifacts, since both 720p and 1,080i images are scaled down by 33 percent and 56 percent respectively to fit the screen. A good external line doubler or video scalar is a must with this panel; it will noticeably improve your viewing experience by eliminating these artifacts, as well as minimizing noise and grain.

This panel is also plagued by false contouring, a video artifact frequently seen on plasma displays, which resembles creeping moss and occurs in dark to near-dark parts of an image. You won't notice this problem as much with brightly lit movies such as Austin Powers II, but videophiles will be driven to distraction by the problem during dark, moody films.

We also plugged in a PC and surfed the Web. But when we set the PC's reolution to 1,280x1,024 there were too many artifacts, making text difficult to read. We had much better luck when we reset the PC's graphics card to 640x480. The panel's built-in aspect-ratio controls allow you to stretch 4:3 images to fit the full width of the screen. The panel automatically detects and displays HDTV signals in wide-screen mode, but you'll have to manually select the correct screen size for your DVDs.

Plug and play
Setting up the panel and all your video inputs couldn't be easier. The screen ships with its stand assembled and mounted. You can plug in composite, S-Video, and both DVD and DTV video sources. This panel will also accept signals from your personal computer or DTV tuner through a 15-pin VGA jack, a row of BNC jacks, or a digital video interface (DVI) jack.

Readying the picture controls was easy as well, but be warned that this is a powerful panel, capable of producing more than 30 foot-lamberts (fL) of screen intensity with a white test pattern. By turning down the contrast and brightness a bit, you'll still get a good picture with lots of contrast and prolong the life of your investment. There are also three selectable color temperatures. We measured the warmest setting at just less than 7,000 degrees, not far off from the 6,500 degrees specified by the American television system. Many consumer TVs don't come nearly that close. The supplied remote is a nice size and very easy to use, with a good range. You'll also have access to all operating and menu controls from the lower front of the panel.

With close to 30 different 42-inch plasma displays on the market right now from nearly a dozen manufacturers, the competition is fierce. Unfortunately, the Sampo display doesn't stand out from the crowd in terms of picture quality or features, so the price is a huge determining factor. Industry giant Sony is selling a similar panel with a list price that's $1,000 less than that of the PME-42V3. But the street prices vary widely from the manufacturer's price. So if you come across a real bargain on this Sampo model, it might be just what your living room needs.

No parts available!!

Pros: You get what you pay for!!

Cons: I have a Sampo 42" that is less than 2 years old! According to the company who I've called numerous times. The set isn't even paid for yet and they don't make parts for it. Buy a Brand name, from a local dealer, It will cost more, but I have to throw a

Can not go wrong!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I am not a video nut, or a professional video "guy". I am a normal American that likes to watch tv after work and have friends over on the weekend for a movie. I wanted to upgrade to a plasma tv and was overwhelmed by the choices. If you have an extra $20K and want a plasma tv -go spend it. But if you are a normal person and want a great picture, the Smapo is the way to go! You can not find a better plasma tv for under $5000 anywhere. I spent weeks looking at all the differnet tv's. I got it home connected all my A/V equipment and I am floored at the quality. If you are looing at plamsa tv's you need to look at a Sampo. I can not rave about it enough. Feel free to email me if you are on the fence between a Sampo and another brand, I will explain what I looked at and why I picked the Sampo.

CNET GOT IT WRONG

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I read all the reviews and noted that this was the CES 2002 BEST PLASMA Winner! The only truth to the CNET review was some artifacting in low light to near black portions of movies. However, lets see all the factors that outweigh that one. Builtin tuner, composite video in, s-video in and two component video in. If you know anything about HDTV, then you'll know that at 852 x 480, a 1080i signal scales in perfect ratio. The pixels are square rather than rectangular as they are in 1024 panels. In a 1024 panel, the 1080i scaling does not translate exactly thereby causing artifacts. Not so in a 852 monitor. You have to go to 1280 to get perfect scaling and that will set you back 10K. I've had this TV for over 6 months now and can't be happier with my purchase!

Best Deal You're Gonna Get!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The SAMPO is the best deal , by FAR that you are going to get on a Plasma screen. When you buy a TV like this, one thing is most important, and thats future use. This set has EVERY connector you can possibly think of, which is CRITICAL for future compatibility. There is even a USB cable for the next (encripted) version of the HDTV Tuners that come out in the winter of 2002/3. SMAPO did an excellent job in providing connectors to this set. They are all here. Yes, it only has ONE S Video connector, and I would have liked more, but an S Video switch box is only 25 bucks, thats all you need to expand the S Video connectors to 4. You can connect your PC to this set one of THREE ways!! If your videocard has DVI, this set has a DVI input. Ok...how does it look? The picture quality of this set is wonderfull. Its as good or better than ANY of the 15 Plasma sets I looked at. This set makes RCN Cable look crummy, but thats something ALL Plasma sets do. Video from my DVD with just the S Video cable is stunning. The 4:3/16:9/zoom1/zoom2 ratio switches are fabulous...even when stretching a 4:3 source to display in 16:9 , it doesnt look bad at all. Another thing.....SAMPO includes roughly 300$ worth of high end video cables with the set. This brings the cost down even further, since you dont have to buy them. those who say "Pay The money Cheapskates" dont get it....when you buy a Sony or Panasonic, you pay for all that TV advertising. This SAMPO is engineered as well as ANY of the other sets I looked at. A fabulous TV at a fab price.

Not Bad for the Buck!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I thoroughly researched this product before buying it. I saw a few thumbs down and that bothered me a bit. But I decided to take a chance...it was all I could afford!..When I finally got the unit I was pleasantly surprised. C'mon Naysayers!! If you wanted 100% sharpness you should have spent $8,000 for a better unit. This one is functional and lots of fun. Depending on the broadcast this baby tries it's best to deliver! Yeah, there is some graininess, but for the price it ain't a bad set!!! Great color, very bright, and very sharp detail in my opinion..it will still knock your socks off!

price/performance=A+

Pros:

Cons:

Review: OK, it's cheaper than the rest of similar plasmas but it will still AWE all your rear projection buddies when they come over. So until EVERYONE has plasma, you will be very happy with this. One word of warning about plsama: the elements do not last indefinitely (they're fluorescent bulbs after all) and as they burn out over time, your $4-10K will slowly pass into the night, but you only live once right?

too much for too little..

Pros:

Cons:

Review: you would spect that for 5k you could get something great, specially when talking about tv's. It' sonly entertainment, and they sell it like gold. The picture quality is not good at all, so what's so good about a tv if you can't appreciate the picture, rather buy a soung system in that case and stick to proyector tv's.

Affordable

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The picture quality of this thing is the only grip. High Def is okay but the black levels and color could be better especially when you are dishing out some cash for this unit.
