"Best large LCD HDTV I have seen" on by vintagebrass

Pros: Nice styling, great features, great HDTV picture

Cons: Pictures suffers when using non-HD sources, expensive

Summary: I compared this to 42" plasmas and in a side by side comparison there is an obvious difference. This makes plasma screens seem grainy, even in HD. It took a little tweaking of the picture settings to get it where I liked it, but once adjusted it looks great! I have digital cable but not HDTV, and on most channels the picture is very good. When hooked up to the DVD player the picture is amazing. It was more expensive than a 42" plasma, but the plasma wouldn't have fit in my cabinet anyway, while this does. The styling is much better looking than the Samsung LN-R408D, although I don't think that it's worth the difference in price based on picture and features. I just never liked that "V" at the bottom of the "8" series LCDs. It was still less than the 40" Sony and has a better picture in my opinion.

"Best 40'' LCD today !" on by dankal

Pros: Very good image quailty even on non HD cable

Cons: Only one HDMI plug (like most of HD flat tv)

Summary: After reading tons of articles and getting some serious headache ,hesitating between Plasma (Pionneer or Samsung ) and LCD (Sony or Samsung ) , I decided to buy an LCD because of better definition (in 42 the plasma were only 1024x768 ),and because of less eyes strain (my kids watch always too close !)I compared the picture quality of the Sony Bravia and the Samsung 409 side by side in the shop and decided for the Samsung .They are both very good (Sony's screen is made by Samsung !)but I found the contrast better on the Samsung .The Sony is here (Paris ,France) at about the same price (100-200 $ more or less for the Sony ,depending the shop ) so if the sony is 1000 $ in the US ,there is no hesitation to have !

"C Net got to get on the ball and review this LCD TV because it is the best out there." on by stondog

Pros: Grate picture out of the box easy set up and good customer support from Samsung.

Cons: Remote control needs some work. I have yet to find anything wrong with the LCD TV!

Summary: C Net get on the ball and review this LCD 40” widescreen TV let people Know the best is Samsungs LN-R409D. Grate buy for the cost. I was a Sony fanatic before buying this Samsung TV and the cost of Sony is outrages. But quickly realized that Samsung was a better TV than the Sony 40" $3400 LCD. It is hard to find ln-r409 LCD TV, Not many stores have them. I got the tv from best buy at the Magnolia Home Theater.

    Grate picture
    Good sound
    Easy set up

Do not waste your time with a cable card. It not the LCD TV fault but the cable company technologies are to blame. The cable card will not allowing all the functions as a box dose.

"Samsung got it right this time." on by endrwal

Pros: Execellent response time, nice features, good design.

Cons: Shiny outside border can be destracting. The stand is a little awkward.

Summary: I think this is a great television, for buyers who don't buy into half-life bearing plasma technologies. At 40" it has excellent resolution, even non-HD signals look clean with vibrant color. Not sure about Samsung's audio claims with the TruSurround XT, but the television itself if amazing. When coupled with an 1080i DVD player with progressive scan and HDMI interface, the picture quality actually aces most plasmas I've seen in the same price range. This is definitely a good investment.

"Does not live up to ratings" on by bhwhite2

    Pros: Good 16:9 hd clarity

Cons: Have to manualy reformat on each signal change

Summary: Did quite a bit of research before purchasing 6 months ago and bought based on user ratings. The LN-R409D has to be manually formatted for each signal change if going from HD to regular satellite signal. It functions quite well on HD when on the 16:9 setting but provides a measly 32 inch picture when on regular signal. The manual states on page 1 that you get screen burn if you allow the picture to have the side bars and it does not take long to do it. But you have to reformat for each different signal which is what I consider an unnecessary pain. Would not purchase it if I had known.
