"Put this up against Sony's XBR and tell me Sony's worth the extra grand?"
Pros: A grand less than the #1 rated XBR for near equal performance = a 10/10 for value!
Cons: I seriously couldn't think of any. This should be c/net's #1 rated flat panel.
Summary: One word. Stunning. Got my set for $1970. Before my purchase, I was comparing it to Sharp's newest 90U series, and Sony's XBR's.
Samsung won on both performance and price. I just couldn't see why the Sony cost a grand more, except for the clear plastic that ran around it's frame, the illuminated logo, and the speakers that run all the way around the set (which I find less atractive than Sharp or Samsung's.
Sharp's unit was very close in performance and price, but lacked VGA inputs. Sam's black levels, perfect geometry, and plethera of connections made Samsung's 40" 1080p an easy choice to take home for under 2 grand.
I highly recommend this set. EQUALS SONY'S XBR FOR THE BEST PICTURE I'VE SEEN ON ANY TV FOR A LOT LESS. That's reason enough for me to give this set a 10 out of 10.

a few things to point out when compared to the xbr/xbr2 is scaling, when using an upconvert(if using) dvd player or maybe watching a broadcast in 480i/p for any reason the sony will look way more better because of the processing the sony features. if you have time, compare them side by side(as i did at best buy for over an hour with dvd players(hdmi) and hd/blu players). i didn't notice any difference when watching hd content, none at all.
when watching the store feed, i noticed how sony's processing really worked, so much less, "grain" and break up. also when watching the upconvert(connected same disc and player on both sets via hdmi) the 4096 looked like crap.
i realize 99% will/should be using a hd player/source of some type so it really doesnt matter, i am going with this set because it is really in my budget and the sony, well, its a freakn grand more, i can buy the lg multi format player for that much and not have to worry. if you don't plan on having an hd source, then go with the xbr2.
