"Problem with the blacks"2.0 starson by crocktherock
Pros: Nice cabinetry, easy to use
Cons: Picture very dark, indistiguishable blacks
Summary: This was my first venture into the HD/digital TV world. I used Monster HDMI to hook up to a 1080i Sony upconverting DVD player. Haven't got digital cable/satelite yet. Started to watch "Devil Wears Prada" which in the opening sequences when Meryl Streep comes to work the first time has a lot of people running around wearing black. I noticed that most of the clothing looked like black blobs with no distiguishable detail - no texture, shade, etc, just black blobs. Dark hair was black blobs. I tried an RCA HDMI 1080i DVD player and same problem.
Just as a sanity check, I played the DVD on my 13 year old tube and hey, one guy was wearing a black knit sweater with a bronze colored polo. Hair had brown highlights.
If I turned the contrast and brightness WAY up I could see the texture, but everything else looked washed out.
Went back to Circuit City where I bought it and theirs looked the same way. The other TVs (Sharp, Sony, Mitsubishi) that were around it didn't. The help didn't believe me at first til they saw it for themselves. Once you notice it, it's hard to ignore.
It's a real shame b/c I really liked everything else about the TV but b/c I'm really buying it for picture quality I took it back last night.
