"Used 1 month. Now sound but no picture. Common problem."0.5 starson by kru18
Pros: Nice picture, when it worked
Cons: Defective parts used
Summary: I did thorough research on this TV before I bought it. (Or so I thought.) The expert reviews and tests were all glowing and the customer reviews on those sites backed it up. So I had narrowed it down to this and a comparable Panasonic that was also highly rated. The PN50B650 was about $50 less, so that's what made the decision. I chose.....poorly. We used this set for approximately one month and all of a sudden the picture went out but we still had sound. I tried turning it on and off with no change. I tried unplugging it from the wall for an extended period of time. No change. I confirmed it was not the satellite box and confirmed it doesn't show a picture for any of the inputs. Sound only, no matter what the source.
Evidently there are a lot of people who aren't coming back and updating their glowing reviews because, in researching this issue (in the hopes it had an easy fix), I find that it is pretty common and the fix is all but easy. (On the wallet, that is. Try a few hundred dollars. Yikes!) It's alarming that something rated this well could have a problem of this magnitude. Evidently it's a known issue with Samsung plasma TVs and has been for a few years.
Luckily it is still under warranty, so it should be fixed at no cost to us....this time. But that doesn't make me feel any better about the long-term outlook. How long until the new known-defective board fails??
I would pass on this set if I had it to do all over again. A nice picture isn't worth the worry that my $1200 TV could crap out again at any time...
