"So far so GREAT!"
on by spaceflowsPros Amazing picture and versatility of controls. Love the SmartTV interface & applications like Netflix, VuDu, Vimeo and Google. VuDu has programs available in "HDX" which look INSANELY BEAUTIFUL! All apps load and play smoothly.
Cons Auto-brightness fluctuates constantly at low contrast settings, regardless of ECO settings - very annoying. Web browsing not its strong suit. Buzzing sometimes very apparent depending on connections: component=bad, HDMI=better.
Summary Overall the Samsung PN64D8000 HDTV is simply AMAZING! My girlfriend and I watched "Bridesmaids" on VuDu the other night in (the HDX version: highest HD quality) and we felt like we were at the movies again, only this time nobody was kicking the back of our seats...except the cats :) The colors were rich but not too punchy, and the textures were seriously life-like.
I am experiencing an auto-brightness/contrast control problem when viewing in dim or dark rooms. The brightness/contrast appears to automatically go up and down intermittently but still often enough that it quickly becomes very distracting and annoying for such an expensive and beautiful piece of technology, especially to the eyes of a videofile such as myself. This really distressed me at first... BUT, it appears that this problem only occurs when the contrast setting is below 50 (which is recommended for the break-in period of 150 hours or so). Not sure if this is due to the Local Contrast Enhancement feature (that I cannot seem to find and therefore access). Besides this early concern, the Samsung PN648000 is turning out to be one mean movie/gaming machine! I played Gears Of War 3 a few nights ago with my buddies online and I was floored by the experience. The 600Hz refresh rate makes a tremendous difference when stacked up against my previous Sharp Aquos LCD with 120Hz. I have not yet tried the "Game Mode" setting which is said to accelerate the gaming experience even more so.
I was very concerned about the "peeling" issue discussed quite a bit on the tech blogs regarding this model, but so far I have not noticed any screen peeling and I have had this TV for a week now. I am keeping my eyes peeled though... Sorry, that was just too easy, I know.
I would highly recommend this TV to anyone who takes their movies and/or gaming seriously. I was able to get this at Best Buy with 4 years of full Geek Squad support at a price matched to the lowest found on Amazon for a new model. I suggest taking this approach (price matching at a large retailer) as the support and return policies are pretty convenient and reassuring. The picture on the PN64D8000 has to be seen to be believed! -

"Brightness Issues!"
on by conch73Pros Very nice picture when there is not problems with the brightness.
Cons My older Philips Plasma has less problems then this one. Out of the box the original screen had a large black line in the middle. It took two weeks to get the screen replaced. Now I am having issues with the brightness controls.
Summary Paid way too much to be having problems with the auto-brightness. Even with the ECO mode turned off the black areas of a picture change brightness back and forth.

"Amazing, highly recommend."
on by justlgPros 1.) Dark Blacks,
2.) Tons of Features
3.) Stylish
4.) Great PQCons None, that I didn't get it sooner
Summary This is an aboslutely amazing Plasma TV, It was either this or the 65 VT by panasonic and I went with this. I have had no problems with pops or peeling screens. When I compared it next to the VT I could not notice the PQ difference. This actually looked better to me. WOuld highly recommend this if you are considering a birght plasma, it is brighter then the panasonic line. Although the VT is a great TV too.
PS....The 3D on this TV looks exactly the same as the Theater Experience if you are using a 3D Blue Ray Disc...this is just based on my opinion of watching the same movies..not the 2D to 3D conversion. Althought that does a great job too.
