  • "Overall a Great T.V."
    5.0 stars
    on by James2Roland

Pros: + Picture quality is excellent
    + Excellent sound quality
+ Great design in the living room
+ Settings menus are well laid out and easy to use

Cons: - I have noticed some flash lighting in the bottom left corner of the screen

Summary: I bought this t.v. to replace our 27" crt. I did a lot of looking before buying. I've had it a little over a week. I have not had a chance to try out the 3-D yet. It is a great "smart t.v." but with a few minor flaws.

My Samsung UN46D6400 television is connected to a Samsung BDD6700 Blu-Ray player (excellent!), Amazon Basics high-speed hdmi cable (excellent!), and an ethernet connection to the t.v. (not wireless) at 12 to 20 or so mgb.

    Pros:
Design: This t.v. looks great in the living room. I was afraid it would overwhelm the room, but it doesn't. Glad I went with a 46" instead of a 40". Love the glossy screen. Reflections are not a problem and the lack of a matte finish I think enhances colors.

Sound quality: Excellent (for a t.v.). I was worried that it would sound completely awful (since the t.v. is so thin) and I can not afford an hdmi capable receiver at the moment. I'm glad I didn't let that keep me from buying the t.v. Keep in mind, though, that a few reviewers have noted a sound-sync problem when running the t.v. through an external audio unit. I have not done this yet.

Picture quality: The picture quality is excellent (but I have not tried out the 3-D yet). Blu-rays look great, dvds look great (after adjusting the automotion a bit), high-definition television looks great. Watching home photos and movies by attaching an external hard drive to the usb port is a lot of fun. Video quality from our point and shoot 720p camera looks great on this t.v.. This t.v. makes most Youtube videos look better than they look on my laptop. Picture sizing options are on the remote to maximize video quality depending on the source. The Wii looks fine on it even at full-screen. The quality of streaming movies from Netflix varies from very good to excellent, but any fault lies with Netflix, not Samsung.

Off-angle viewing: I've read some professional reviews that note "poor off-angle viewing" quality. We haven't noticed the picture degrading except at the most extreme of angles. We think the picture looks great from just about anywhere in the room.

Apps (Smart Hub): Smart Hub has a lot of potential, but it's not totally there yet. Some apps are outstanding (such as Vudu, Pandora, and Googlemaps). Other apps (such as Vimeo) definitely feel "half-baked." The Youtube app on the t.v. stinks. It automatically loads a video when you start the app. I can't figure out how to stop it from loading a random video. If you've got kids in the room random Youtube videos chosen by the app are NOT a good thing. On the other hand, the Youtube app on my Samsung bdd6700 Blu-Ray player is great. It does NOT load a random video on start-up. It just sits there nicely until I search for something or choose to play something.

    Interface:
The t.v. settings menus are well laid out and easy to use. App interfaces vary, but are generally very good to excellent.

    Cons:
The backlight: This is an edge-lit led t.v. and has some of the problems that come with that technology. I have noticed some flashlighting in the bottom left corner of the screen. It is not there all of the time and it is not bad enough to return the t.v. or mess up the picture. Most of the time I don't notice it at all. Also, the backlight has uniformity problems when using some Smart Hub apps such as Youtube. This uniformity problem does not seem to be there when watching Blu-rays, dvds, or cable television. In the daytime or in a room with a light on it probably wouldn't be noticed. If you like to watch Youtube videos in the dark, it will probably drive you bonkers. This problem only seems to there when using some of the apps.

Bottom line: A great smart t.v. with a ton of capabilities and a great picture for the price. Sure the "backlight uniformity with some apps problem" is a disappointment, but this t.v. does such a great job with so many different input sources that I'm willing to cut Samsung some slack for that. but before you will buy this samsung tv, I suggest you have to check for best price before you decide at: checkingprices.info/samsung-un46d6400/

Pair this t.v. with the Samsung BDD6700 Blu-Ray player. They "play well" together.

    Good Luck!
