"Fantastic TV for $1932 Buy Me.."5.0 starson by Retsehcc
Pros: Vibrant Colors, good Black, Easy Calibration to tune to YOUR liking
Cons: Hub not perfect, Remote App for Android needs help as does the Facebook app. Over saturated color on Dynamic Preset.
Summary: Like everyone, I researched and read everything everywhere about every LED/LCD/DLP/Plasma/Edge Lit vs. Back Lit vs. Whatever... I got tired head reading it all.
One thing I noticed was that Samsung was always in the top 5 so I honed my search to LG/Sharp/Sony/Samsung. Samsung was what I finally decided on based on the following:
Size = 55" or larger
240Hz motion blur
4 HDMI inputs
USB (for camera and phones)
WiFi or Cable to access Internet/Netflix/Pandora/Facebook
DLNA certified (stream media from PC to TV)
Small bezel and overall slim (front to back)
I found all that in the UN55 series and the reviews were very favorable from most places but the consumer reviews were much better. I was going to purchase the UN55D7900 as it was $700 less. The major difference between UN55D7900 and UN55D8000Y is the 8000 has a smaller bezel (with a cool lit up SAMSUNG logo at the bottom) and local dimming (look it up). I could not justify spending the $700 but... it went on sale at bestbuy.com for $1932 as a bundle for one day!
What $1932 got me:
1x UN55D8000Y TV
2x Samsung Rechargeable 3D Active Glasses (came in TV box)
2x Samsung 3D Active Glasses (model SSG-3050GB/ZA)
1x Samsung - 3D Wi-Fi Ready Blu-ray Player (model BD-D5500ZA)
That was a heck of deal!
So, get home and put the base on the TV (mount later when I decide which wall to put it on). Very easy to do.. READ INSTRUCTIONS. I did the Alpha Male thing and did not and ended up needing to unscrew it from the TV and do it right. Still took less that 5 minutes.
I hurriedly hooked up the HDMI cable to the AT&T U-Verse receiver so I could catch the end of the Dallas Mavericks game that went into double overtime.. but I digress. The image out of the box was great. No issues like I have read about. Simply life like.
Then I watched Castle, Criminal Minds, CSI , everything else on the DVR.. WOW. IT was like they were recorded like soap operas are, as if you were in the room with them as the picture is amazing. I did not think that a TV would have that profound of an affect on the realness factor. I have a 120" DLP projector in the media room and I want to watch the Samsung now for sports and everything else.
We tried the 3D glasses with the 3D content you can stream through the smart hub. That was great. You sync the rechargeable ones once and they work perfect every time. The others with the batteries need to be turned on again and again when switching 3D content. No issue, only takes a second. You can tell when the 3D syncs with the glasses as they dim just before you see the content. Both sets worked great and the 3D pictures were fairly crisp with no color fading. Even my 5 yr old and 9 yr old boys liked them and only got mad when I stopped replaying the Kung Fu Panda 2 trailer after the 7th time. The rechargeable glasses have almost no weight to them and both pairs can be worn comfortably for a movie or sport event (cant wait for that ESPN3D)!
The remote is a little funky but you can get used to it. Smart Hub is cool as are the Yahoo widget bar that can be accessed as a small bar at the bottom of the screen. Used the traffic map just before work to see what route I needed to take to work.. Still had the News running too. Weather is Very helpful when you just missed the weather forecast...
Hooked up the Blu-ray Player via HDMI so my wife could watch the latest Twilight movie. I started it up for her but ended up watching half of it as the picture was amazing. If you are used to your programs looking good but with that hazy TV look, this TV will blow you away. It really will.
What you MUST do is calibrate the picture to suit what YOU like. Everyone is different, as my wife and I argue about the settings, and you need to make the picture look good to YOU. Every reviewer out there will be different because they like different things. I like deep deep black while my wife likes less black and semi-over saturated color (puke, barf, puke). It is easy to do and only takes a few minutes and the result is a happy you. Look it up online and you can find how people calibrate it.
Summary: ROCKS. Image is awesome, sometimes weird on motion but you can overlook that as the image it AWESOME. It will change your view on TV and what you watch. Go get it!
