"Why does CNET like Sharp so much?"
Pros: Eye-catching
Cons: Thicker than most LCDs, picture is not up to par with Samsung or Sony
Summary: I am having a hard time believing there is not some sort of back alley deal with CNET and Sharp because they constantly rate the Sharp 32 inch LCD as the best one around.
However if anyone has ever stepped into a Best Buy or Circuit City to do some side to side comparisons of the 32 LCDs on the market they will see that not only does Sony XBR (albeit a larger price tag, but not by much compared to this model) but also the Samsung 32in LNS3241D LCD blows Sharp's picture out of the water. Sharp's picture looks washed out in comparison to those two sets but somehow there are no reviews for either of them on CNET.com??
I love CNET, use it everyday, but it bothers me that they will reward the Sharp 32in LCD model (last years) as the best 32in model on the market when there are two better candidates sitting right in front of your face. Are they not allowed to review Samsung or Sony? What is going on here?
And just in case people want to argue price on this you can get the Samsung 32in LNS3241D LCD for $1249 with free shipping and no tax at Amazon.com right now. That price is going to be tough to beat for what you get from the TV.
If you still don't believe that the Sharp 32in is not up to par with Samsung's or Sony's just stop by your local Best Buy or Circuit City sometime, take a look at all three, and then try to tell yourself the Sharp picture is up to par with the other two.
C?mon CNET I rely on your site to be the best! Review the XBR and the Samsung and THEN tell us whose the best.

If I read all the comments and comments on the comments correctly, your review is not based on this TV -- right?
You're talking about a different model, built in a different factory, in a different country. -
Sharp looks best to me.Sharp is also a more responsible company.Sharp has invested millions in solar technology and is world leader in solar panel production.Sony was caught red handed hiding malicious code on customers computers(in music CDs).Samsung builds good TVs but the Koreans are still behind Japanese on long term reliability.

I have repeatedly had similar observations concerning the Sharp sets. On several occasions I even tried to make sure that connections and settings were as equal as possible. Same size Sharp's just appear duller than the Sony's and Samsung's(Sony does use Samsung screens). If one considers the duller look as more natural, perhaps a plasma set should be considered.

Um, Maven. You did notice that the model you're commenting on is a 37" didn't you? I only ask because you go on and on about 32" sets.
if you were comparing this to a 37" Sony, then maybe I would give your review some credence, but since Sony doesn't make a 37", your argument is moot. -
sony requires retailers to sign agreements saying that they'll display the sony tvs with absurdly high brightness levels and certain content only. as a result the sony picture looks more impressive, however, real life doesn't have a high powered lamp behind it, so the garishly bright picture of the sony is far from being accurate.

When I read GadgetMaven's review, I hadn't seen the LC-37D40U yet. After seeing it several times in different stores, it DID look slightly washed out compared to other TVs I looked at, but when I started looking seriously, the Sharp was the only TV I looked at that had real looking greens, the others all were cartoony, either slightly or a lot, and I noticed that blues were odd too. Just a little thing, but it meant something to me.
Besides that, out of the box, the color level is way, way too high on all of them, and the first thing I did in the store and at home was back down the color level almost all the way, but two notches above no color at all.
In every comparison I've done, the Sharps always win or tie for first place in every meaingful category. -
I COMPLETELY AGREE THAT BOTH THE SAMMY 3241D AND THE SONY XBR LOOK BETTER THAN THIS SHARP D40U SERIES LCDS. I HAVE BEEN IN THE MARKET FOR AN LCD HDTV FOR THE LAST COUPLE MONTHS AND HAVE NARROWED IT DOWN TO EITHER THE 3241 OR 51D FROM SAMSUNG OR THE LG X1D. PERSONALLY I THINK THE SAMMY'S COLORS ARE MUCH MORE VIBRANT AND HAVE MUCH BETTER COLOR SATURATION, AND A BUDDY OF MINE JUST GOT THE X1D AND IT HAS AMAZING PQ IN HD

I own the Sharp Aquos 45 in LCD. After much research and comparisons of various LCD models narrowed my choices to Sony (40 in) and Sharp 45 in. The only place that carried both where I live was Circuit City. Sony's 46 in is still only available at the Sony Store or Sony Style. I found the Sharp to have a crisper picture, better audio and overall more attractive than the Sony. I have always favored Sony (own 3) but in this instance Sharp proved to have the better product.

You didn't even have a direct comment on the TV. Do you own it? Have you had extended experience with it? I can't stand it when someone makes off topic comments that are only remotely related and not useful. Sorry but your comment was useless.
