"Fantastic Picture on good material."
Pros: Good blacks, great colors, a great TV.
Cons: Built in speakers not great, remote could be better, slightly narrow viewing angle.
Summary: When I started looking at LCD TVs about a year and a half ago, the Sharp TVs always looked better , or at least equal to the best in their size range, at least in the 32" and up I was looking at. I thought about waiting till the LC-37D90U came out and dropped in price, but with a 23+ year old TV, it was time to go shopping.
When I got seriously close to buying, I looked around and finally found a place that would hook up a DVD player and a real HD source to the Sharp I ended up with, the Samsung LNS4051D, and the Toshiba 37HL66. The Sony's seemed to be overpriced, so I passed on even really considering them seriously.
The first DVD the guy found was Star Wars EpIII, played on a Samsung upconverting do 1080i DVD player. At first, the Sharp and the
Samsung were blindingly bright, the Toshiba's color was amazingly potent. After fiddling with the settings, the LC-37D40U was the clear winner, but I could have lived with all three. On HDTV sources, the Sharp won again, with the Samsung close behind, and the Toshiba a little behind the Samsung. Colors on the Toshiba seemed to be off a little, greens were annoying potent, and a race car I knew well was a very odd shade of blue on it, but was nearly perfect on the Samsung, and was absolutely perfect on the Sharp. I watched a few minutes of several movies and the Sharp won again and again. All three sets looked ok, not great on SDTV. I didn't notice any ghosting on any of them.
Now that I've had it for a few days, and have adjusted everything to where I want it, I'm a very satisfied customer. The built in speakers are ok, but most people buying this TV would have some sort of home theater set up anyway, and no need them at all, so it's not a real con at all. The Sharp does seem to have a slightly narrower viewing angle than the Samsung, but that again is no con as far as I'm concerned, as there is only a slight lightening up of the contrast until you are way off the center.
The remote is better than some of them, particularly the cheaper off brand TV's, but the button layout annoys me a little. I have 4 remotes right now, and I hope to "retire" the Sharp remote to the drawer soon, andjust use the one the cable box came with. It's a lousy remote, no doubt, but it's the only one of the 4 that can do almost everything I need to do on.
All in all, it's a great TV, and I have no buyer's remorse at all.
