"PLEASE DO NOT BUY THIS TV"
Pros: Nice design
Cons: Uneven and Cloudy Backlight, no solution from Sony
Summary: I will share my personal experience with this set. In any case, If you want to avoid a very annoying problem and be part of a worldwide issue (same as the laptop batteries). You better go for another option. I bought this high end TV and second day of using it I noticed sort of clouds on the corners, during dark scenes. I won't give all the details of the story. But the bottom line: the clouds were getting worse. I returned the item. I got a new one from the dealer and I got the same problem. Then I searched on the web and I found hundreds of people with the same issue with no answer from Sony. It seems to be that the problems are with sets manufactures on August 2006 and beyond. Please check this link to see how my fancy XBR looks like: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=748779
This is not acceptable for this type of high tech device. With all these PS3, batteries and now TV issues.. no more Sony to me.

I paid $2850on aprice match at bestbuy.
Broadcast is great and PS3 Blu-Ray is perfect. -
No Clouds, Very clear high resolution picture,
Beautiful BLU-RAY pics from my SONY PS3. Broadcast is great, I like the power meter.
I've had a KDL40XBR2 also and is was just as good but I took it back and got the 46 inch on a price match at BestBuy. Who wouldn't want 6 more inches for 50 bucks more. -
Hi ,
sony has issued a fix for the cloud problem
also if you lower the brightness this might help try 50 or 60. -
Have you calibrated the set or are you running with 100% backlight, 100% picture and 100% brightness? Mine had clouds as you describe when I brought it home (the factory setup is silly). When I adjusted the set using the THX setup on my Star Wars DVD, they could no longer be seen and the blacks are very uniform. The sets are set artificially bright to make them pop on the show floor, but the picture with these settings is inaccurate (too bright, off color, to much contrast). Once calibrated, I doubt you will see any problem. In my case, I don't care if the blacks are a little off when running with un-realistic settings. I am very, very happy with my set after two weeks of use.

I have my second Sony 46XBR2 set and have the same problem when the display setting are set to full Pixel as the manual state is for 1080i or 1080p signals. When set to this mode a white dotted line intermittantly appears across the top of the screen and sometime has white noise riding along with it. This problem does not appear when the program is in full screen HD. Only when it is sized to the 4.3 mode. The Sony Manual specifically states the full pixel mode is for receiving a 1080i or 1080p signals. When I called Sony support they told me the settings were correct. Now that I am on my second TV Sony engineers are telling me to change my settings to Normal mode then the lines on the side and the top will disappear. They say the reason for the lines is because Satellite and Cable Companies use the edges on the picture to store information as in close captioning. My question is why is Sony changing their mind and changing settings from the manual. Beware buyers! The Sony has a wonderful picture, one of the best I have seen but dealing with the intermittant lines is a real show stopper. Anyone else seen the problem? 7 white dashed lines close together in the upper left running horizontally across the screen with three wider dashed lines distributed across the remainder top to the right.

...Well I don't see hundreds of negative reviews on the XBR2. Just a few and many of them suspiciously appear to be people(like yourself) using different names and repeating posts like using the word "abysmal" over again in the summary area

If I hadnt seen the SONY XBR2 in the store sitting among about 30 other LCDs and plasmas...and clearly displaying the best picture of all, I might have taken your post seriously. But I bought the SONY and it comes in just as clear as seen in the store PERFECT. Either you have no clue how to set the XBR2 up or you have some kind of agenda against SONY products.
