Pros: Price, Primary and secondary accuracy
Cons: After firmware update, frayscale non-linear under 50 IRE, causing bluish/green tinge in dark grays, picture flicker utilizing "full-pixel" Screen aspect ratio. Audio dropouts utilizing HDMI connection. Clousy-uneven screen.
Summary: Sony issued a firmware update in August 09 for the V5100 models to correct audio dropouts, and the auto-dimming feature.
Prior to firmware update, I was able to achieve a linear grayscale from 20 IRE to 100 IRE, but since then, only from 50 IRE to 100 IRE resulting in an annoying greenish/blue tinge in dark scenes where it should be dark gray (I'm an ISF Certified calibrator using both a Sencore OTC1000 and CalMAN Eyeone Pro meters). In addition, audio dropouts persist when an HDMI connection is used, as does a screen flicker/judder down middle of screen when utilizing their "full-pixel" screen aspect mode for 1080i material.
I have contacted Sony repeatedly, and their technical support read from a script advising me to reboot display on numerous occasions. Sony's repair tech (Qualxserve)came to my home and replaced motherboard, but unfortunately it didn't help. The tech recommended changing the panel itself to "try" to fix the problem, but didn't think it would.
Sony's reluctance to address the problem and accept returns are pissing off a lot of their customers. This is my first Sony product, and I'm regretting it.
Please re-review this product, with the firmware update, and put use a meter to measure grayscle, or just put an 11-step grayscale pattern (or Dark Knight) and report your findings, so that other consumers can get an idea what they are in for.
