"Not bad at all."
Pros: Very nice HD and SD picture. Sounds good too.
Cons: Preset picture modes a bit extreme. Only one HDMI.
Summary: I'm no expert, but I've been shopping around for some time. I ventured into HDTV last year but returned the Magnavox LCD and Samsung Slimfit tubes that I tried. Seems the good stuff was just beyond my buying power at the time, so I waited, and I'm glad I did.
I bought at a big box retailer's sale for just under a grand, so was able to get the 5 year protection plan for the sub 1G rate. The final price including tax was less than even the online retailers were offering at this time. So I feel like I got a deal.
I went ahead and got the HDMI cable hooked up to my cable company's DVR (set to 720p). I've lived with it for 2 weeks now. Of course, the HD picture is awesome. The out of the box colors settings look good to me so I didn't feel like I had to change much. I also think the SD picture is very, very good. I have a progressive scan DVD player, and the 480p looks very good via component cables.
Preset picture modes seem a bit extreme - sports setting = brightness and contrast at 100! - so I'm not using those. That is a minor flaw IMO. It is a slight bummer that there is only one HDMI, but not a big deal for my needs right now - just in the future possibly.
I think the aspect ratios are well done. The TV detects the incoming signal fine as far as I can tell. Remote is backlit and easy enough to use. I like the way the TV looks. I prefer the flatter black finish on this LCD as opposed to the glossy blacks out there. The sound is good and has some different features to play with, but for movies I'm using the receiver and surround sound speakers.
Overall, I'm very pleased. I wonder why CNET hasn't reviewed any of the Tosh LCDs? The only review I found was from a consumer magazine and they liked it too. Anyway, I like it!
