"Beware of Toshiba Warranty & Service"
Pros: Clear picture, intuitive user interface menus.
Cons: Slow TV response to remote control. Lousy Toshiba manufacturer's warranty response.
Summary: We bought this TV as our first LCD based on our experience with our Toshiba 32" CRT television. The picture looks great, although it gets a little fuzzy if you sit too close to it. We plan to subscribe to HD cable soon to get the full HDTV experience.
We thought the built-in DVD player was a cool idea...how wrong we were. Less than 60 days after our purchase, the built-in DVD player stopped working. We followed the instructions and placed a Warranty claim with Toshiba. A local repair center, Alpha Electronics (Phoenix), picked up the TV to perform the repair.
Two weeks later, we still didn't have our TV back and we called Toshiba North America for a status. They had not been able to locate a replacement DVD player. For a new TV, they couldn't find a single part anywhere in North America...?! We were told we were just out of luck and they would let us know when they tracked down a spare part.
After another week, we went to Ultimate Electronics, the retail outlet where we purchased the TV. One of their customer support specialists managed to located a replacement DVD player via the Internet in less than 1 hour! We were given the information and passed it onto the TV repair company. They said that they would not order it unless it was approved by Toshiba (one can only imagine they have been stiffed by Toshiba in the past for spare parts). Sympathizing with their position, we called Toshiba North America and told them the part had been located on the internet and asked them to approve the shipment. You guessed it, they wouldn't approve the order of the part because they were still trying to find one in their internal network! Another two weeks went by along with numerous calls to the repair center and Toshiba. Toshiba finally approved the purchase of the part from the internet supplier but only AFTER we demanded a NEW replacement TV. After the spare part was shipped to our repair center, we received a call from Toshiba saying they couldn't locate a part and that they were looking for a way to replace the TV. How disfunctional, inept and clueless can one company be...?!
We just got our repaired TV back this week. I forgot to mention our repair center "moved" during the 7 weeks we were without our TV and wouldn't deliver the TV until they had enough deliveries to "justify" the trip. It could be another week or more before we would see our TV so my wife made the 80 mile round trip drive to pick up the TV that should have been delivered back to us.
Bottom line here is that though we like the TV, the Customer Service NIGHTMARE we went through with Toshiba will ensure that we will NEVER purchase another TOSHIBA product. They wouldn't even extend our Manufacturer's warranty for the ~2 month period we were without our TV!
Our retail center says that Sony and Mitsubishi are "Tops" with customer service. Guess we'll look at their products for our next purchase.
