"Excellent TV"
Pros: Crystal clear picture. Simple to set up. Able to receive some cable HDTV channels without a converter.
Cons: Sound quality is low to average. External amplifier/speakers will be a necessary option for most users.
Summary: I had my sights on a 46? big screen TV. The only TV in my range with the quality I was seeking was the WEGA rear projection Sony. Unfortunately my wife had hesitations about loosing her very expensive and still in perfect shape entertainment center. This turned into one of the most challenging purchase decisions of my adult years. Even after days of internet and shopping comparisons I spent an hour in the store before I could pull the trigger.
With a size requirement of 39? I was extremely limited in how large a screen size I could go with. I chose the Toshiba because of the quality of my nearly 8 year old lap top that has since been handed down to my daughter and the internal DVD player that eliminated the need for a new up-converting model.
Extremely pleased with my decision. If space is a constraint you need to consider this TV. Hooked up to my AV system wide screen movies are very enjoyable and the smaller size is not a concern since the couches are only about 8 feet from the screen.
The ability to get 3 major networks in HDTV on my current cable package without having to pay for additional services is a plus. The picture quality of CSI Miami makes it worth watching even if you do not have an interest in that program.
My only concerns were minor. The sound quality of the TV is similar to the Sony 32? SDTV it replaced. Not bad but not enough oomph to make movie watching an experience. I had hoped to move my AV receiver to the basement with that TV. I kept it with the Toshiba HDTV and am happy with the resulting audio performance.
One thing I had not considered was the DVD is located on the side. With only about 1-1/2? on each side of the TV is was not possible to insert or remove a DVD. Oops. I solved the problem by putting the TV on a turntable that allows me to rotate the TV to access the DVD. Something to consider if you are putting it in an enclosed entertainment system.
I still want a 46? TV and someday hope to complete my basement remodel to make it into a complete entertainment center?but by that time my goal will probably be an even larger screen. For now, I could not be happier with the Toshiba 37?, and that my wife is content.

I purchased this TV end of April, 2007, solely to use the DVD player (no satellite, cable, speakers, anything else connected). 4th of July the DVD player broke. Several phone calls to Toshiba customer service got me the phone numbers of local service providers, who were supposed to provide in-home repair service as per the warranty. The first service provider refused to come to the house because it was too far away and they couldn't get reimbursed for mileage unless I came down there and brought paperwork for them to submit to their Toshiba rep for mileage reimbursement. The second service provider, Vann's, where i bought the TV, refused to come to the house because (get this) the service guy is allergic to cats. (1 in 4 american households has a cat, why did they hire a guy allergic to cats rendering the in home service impossible?) So I haul the TV back down to the cat free store service center, where I was informed very snottily that it's broken, DVD parts on are backorder from the factory, and might possibly be available August 31 but they have so many other Toshibas with the same problem that they might not get enough DVD players to repair all of them and it's first come first served. My advice - don't buy this TV if you're interested in the built in DVD player. Not worth the hassle. And cross your fingers nothing goes wrong with the TV.
